I really don't understand rivian logic for 21" on the r2 with one tire option and with the shitty pirelli nevertheless. They are repeating the same mistake as the r1. It is so bad that they don't even included the 21" option for r1 gen 2.
They are not the same tire size or wheel width. The R2 tires have a different series and section width than R1. You cannot make assumptions about tire availability based on just the fact that they are both 21" wheels.

I'm aware that it is not the same size as the r1 21". Based on people commented on here. There is only 1 available for the r2 21" much like the r1 . I have a set of 21" sit in the garage like most people in here that switched to 20"

OK I see what you mean - I thought it might be be a more widely adopted size. (e.g. Volvos have 21" wheels and a bunch of SUV tire options)

Discount Tire is showing 255/65R19 KO3s available in May:
Rivian R1T R1S R2 Wheels Options, Tire Sizes, Width, Offset - Hub Bore Size - 19" and 20" 1775738880817-88

Great AT tires but will come with a pretty decent range hit as well. Specs list them as 3 peak as well.

You'll gain back some by running AS tires on the 20"—and depends on which exact tires you pick. With all R1 tire options, the factory tires have demonstrated to be about as efficient as it gets. And Rivian will have a 20" AS option. It's the design that is on the original concept car, the one with the four silver squares (see R2 Premium), also shod with Pirelli Scorpion MS (just in 255/60R20). And the range figure is the same as the 21" option (255/55R21).
OH YEAH That is what I'm going to get 20 inch AS

After reading this thread I may wait for the premium instead of going for the launch edition if the upcharge for the 20" wheels is anywhere near the $3,700 Rivian charges for the R1S. Hopefully they wouldn't charge that much on a lower priced mass market vehicle. Means I wouldn't get Launch Green though which is disappointing.

Question, since there some pretty knowledgeable people out there. With the 20" setup being only $1000 more, doesn't it make sense to go with that size even if one prefers all season tires? It just seems that there will be a significant cost savings replacing tires over many years with the 20".
We're thinking of swapping out the AT after delivery with an all season and using the AT as a snow tire seasonally. Does this make sense?

Nothing wrong with doing that. The wheels are all the same size at 32” diameter I believe. The 20” rim will give you more sidewall though vs 21” rim. Less risk with potholes of damaging the rims.

Yep, the 20" tire will have about a 0.5" thicker/taller sidewall.

It's the old, down an inch on the wheel, up and inch on the tire height (which is ~0.51" x 2 = 1")

255/55-21 = 140mm / ~5.51" sidewall
255/60-20 = 153mm / ~6.02" sidewall

There is literally only one 21” tire available, the Pirelli. There are a number of stock 20” options.

Thanks for all the input..and yes this is probably most important, the number of stock options. Driving through Wyoming and getting a flat could be a real pain with trying to find the 21' tires let alone the cost of them

anyone care to explain why the 21" tires get the better range over the 20" on the LE? I'm trying to maximize range, so I want to get the 21" tires from the configurator, but google says that the bigger the tire, the less range...? Why aren't the 20" tires more efficient? Does it come down to the tread? Can I replace the tires that come on the stock 20" rims and delete the range penalty professed by Rivian?

For context, I live in the southwest, and I'll absolutely never drive in snow, both by choice and by circumstance. I can't handle temps below 10ºC lol

Normally that's true- but the case here is the 20's are all-terrain rubber compounds which matters (stickier/softer compounds, deeper and more complex tread blocks and more tread squirm, and stiffer sidewalls).

And while I don't know for certain, I would expect that the 20" AT's are also heavier wheels to handles off-road which equals more unsprang mass. Altogether though, a 7% difference is pretty good.

By the way, AT tires are not, by their primary nature, snow tires FWIW. And yes- as many in this thread have expressed and have done with their R1's you can replace the 20's with a number of all-season options. There is only ONE tire available for the 21's.

Have you had low-profile tires before (shorter sidewalls like the 21's)? If not-just be prepared to curb them ;) I love the look, but invariably I find a curb within the first year :p

It sucks that the 21" rim only has one tire brand and my initial research on the Pirelli Scorpion is that they don't last very long.....but that rim looks the best to me.

Going to be so mad with myself when I need tires but they look so awesome!
