I was able to purchase Rivian Care back in late 2025 as R1S was nearing 50K miles (2 years of ownership). Close to 61K when I had a thermal fault/AC not working issue.

Service center 1st determined it was due to a faulty active grille shutter. Upon further inspection, tech also found both front carpets wet. SC then filed a claim with Rivian Care/Assurant. Took a week for adjuster to come onsite and approve the repair estimates (~$6k).
Repairs includes the grille shutter replacement, AC box, insulation, carpeting etc.

You are supposed to pay for the repairs after approval then Rivan Care/Assurant pays you. You also need to submit paperwork and etc, but the overall process is actually trouble free. There are conflicting steps from both Rivian Care phone support and service advisor. Phone support tells you to create an account at http://www.autoclaims.com/ and file a claim which is incorrect. You go to https://vehiclecareplan.com and setup account (useful to track claim status but nothing else to do here as process is mostly between SC and Rivian Care).

Steps if repairs are done at SC.
1) SC files claim
2) Adjuster approves repairs
3) Depending on how long repairs take, you may get payment by Rivian Care/Assurant before paying SC.

From what I was told, process may change in future where claims and payments are handled directly between SC and Rivian Care.

This is really helpful, i have always been curious since this is only offered to select areas/owners in TX and I cant seem to find a good amount of information there and from rivian directly. Hopefully in the future, it can cover more states and claims/payments wont be something the owner stresses out about.

Very limited information since program is still in pilot and even buyers of such plans, many haven't reached original warranty expiration (esp for G1 quad 4/60K).

Crazy that a vehicle needs $6k of work done for the air conditioning system at only 60k miles. I guess it could happen to any vehicle but it's never happened with any I've owned and well into 100k miles of ownership. Glad you had the Rivian Care!

Rivian rate is ~$230 an hour and AC work usually requires dash removal which is labor intensive (8+ hours).

Asking the customer to pay $6K to Rivian then wait to be reimbursed is kind of a big ask IMO. It's not like there's any question Rivian Care is going to eventually reimburse the customer, so have Rivian Care just pay Rivian directly. Hopefully they will revise that policy sooner rather than later. What if the repair was $15K or $20K, is the customer supposed to lay that out?

Right? Three of our four R1Ts have needed this HVAC/carpet replacement, all under 30k miles. One is going in for the same thing a second time, and it has less than 20k miles. Some people have reported this procedure happening 4x times. It’s one of the major Gen 1 reliability issues… I made a PSA thread about it a while back and a lot of people replied to report their own HVAC drain plug issue: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...eck-your-carpets-for-signs-of-moisture.48540/

ac box plug failure with wet carpet / replacement is common to all gen 1. If it has not happened yet, it will… be sure to get it fixed before 60k miles.

Pricing will vary greatly based on term of the service contract and how much overlap with existing manufacture's warranty (I've seen posted quotes from 2kish upwards of 9k). Mine was for 4 years (coverage until late 2029, unlimited miles, zero deductibles) at $4800. Currently paying under 24 month installments which is same price as single.

Indeed sounds like a drain or seal issue that could have been explored and corrected before so much wet damage.

I had a 5 year old, 40K mile BMW i3 with an AC compressor that self destructed, throwing shrapnel through the entire AC system destroying it all, including the cooling lines through the drive battery. Repair quote was over $22K parts and labor before taxes. Had BMW used a trap in the AC dryer (like virtually all other vehicle AC systems), the repairs probably would have been in the $6K-8K range, and the car would not have been effectively totaled. Had BMW offered me a reasonable settlement for their design fault, say, $8K credit representing the difference between the before disaster fair market value of the car and the post disaster salvage value of the car, as credit towards the purchase of a new BMW, I would have purchased a new BMW. Instead I got a $2K "good will" credit (less than a typical retail discount) and they forever lost a customer.
