Has anyone else had:
  • Multiple 12V replacements in a short time?
  • Been charged out of warranty for it?
  • Found a root cause beyond just “bad battery”?
Four of them in a 2022 truck.

No. I think the last set might have technically been my responsibility but Rivian fucked up, they acknowledged it, and paid for batteries and a $1k towing trip.

One was precipitated by a HV issue. The others just failed. One set was very closely after another set during a time when people/buzz/rumor was saying they may have had a bad batch. The first set lasted the longest.

I will be going to Ohmmu sodium the next time they fail.

for 12v battery it is 36k miles/3 years warranty
The battery you already replaced also comes with a 24 month warranty. Be ready to pull out your invoice from the job cause some SC’s like to fight it.

No, it doesn't. The replacement carries the remainder of the original warranty if it was replaced under warranty. If the OP paid out of pocket, the new warranty is 2yr/24k.

It wasn’t replaced under the original warranty which is why I stated it comes with a 2 year warranty.

Hey all — curious if others have run into this.

I have a 2022 R1T and had my 12V battery replaced in Dec 2024. Just got a notification again this month (April 2026) saying it needs to be replaced… so barely ~16 months later.

What’s throwing me off:
  • I don’t drive the truck that much. I have ~27k miles
  • No obvious issues lately
  • Now it’s out of warranty, so I’m assuming I’ll have to pay

Is this normal?? It feels kind of crazy to be replacing a 12V battery this often.

I’ve seen some chatter about 12V issues on these trucks, but wasn’t sure if repeat failures like this are common or if something else might be going on (parasitic drain, software, etc.).

Has anyone else had:
  • Multiple 12V replacements in a short time?
  • Been charged out of warranty for it?
  • Found a root cause beyond just “bad battery”?
Appreciate any insight — trying to figure out if this is just how these trucks are or if I should push back with service.
I HAVE A 2023 R1S, JUST NOTIFIED I NEED MY 3RD BATTERY WITH 25,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. COST IS COVERED BY WARRANTY BUT THIS IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL...TESLA 12V LAST 4-5 YEARS. ANNUAL BATTERY REPLACEMENT WARRANTS A LIFETIME BATTERY WARRANTY AT $700-800 PER BATTERY CHANGE. THIS WILL BECOME AN EXPONENTIALLY MORE SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM AS RIVIAN SELLS MORE VEHICLES IF THIS IS NOT RESSOLVED. SEEMS TO BE A CONSISTENT ISSUE WITH 2022 & 2023 VEHICLES.

Why is it out of warranty? 60k / 6yr - no?
They should not be consumed in under two years at the rate we are seeing. Sounds like an engineering issue with 12V battery maintenance.

How many cars have you owned that require a new battery every 12-24 months?

The OP never said if he paid for the first replacement or if it was done under warranty.

They commented and said it would suck to have to pay another $800 16 months later. Why are you arguing this? Go read the thread yourself before making ridiculous comments.

Honestly, what's the point in arguing about it? Being right doesn't make your battery last longer does it? Yes, there is an issue, in some cars. There are R1s that have never had 12V replaced.

Wow. Overreact much? And FWIW, the OP comment never said another $800...

I’ve got an appointment scheduled for this Thursday, so we’ll see what they say. The notification popped up right after a software update, and now I’m seeing the red battery icon on the dashboard.

I’m also going in for the toe link recall at the same time, so at least it’s all getting looked at in one visit.

Really hoping Rivian doesn’t charge for this — having to replace a 12V battery every 15–16 months at ~$800 feels pretty excessive.

Btw I started the appointment no one from Rivian reached about the battery or toe link recall.

I really hate it when people add their own interpretations and assumptions to what I (or others) write. OP didn't say he'd paid, and everything he says suggests he did NOT pay. It's a 2022 and got a battery in late 2024; I believe the battery is covered for three years, right?

Anyway, Rivians do seem to both eat too many batteries AND be overly sensitive to a potential battery issue.

I've got a '23 R1S where they proactively replaced the battery in February '25 and then had to replace it again in January of this year. They also replaced a couple of other boards when they did the battery replacement in January, implying that they learned what (at least in my case) was causing the Rivian to shorten the expected life of the 12V battery.

Not to defend Rivian, but as early adopters we should expect some features like this as the vehicle ages. I'm grateful that I didn't have to pay for anything with either 12V issue, but I also know that I got a heck of a deal when I bought this in 2023. I consider that the discount I got will come with some "features" like the 12V issue because the cars simply haven't been on the road for 8-10 years and they haven't had the chance to collect the data necessary for prevention.

During my two-hour drive home from an overnight this morning, I was reminded just how much I REALLY enjoy driving this vehicle. Sure - I could have waited to buy one (like a Gen3), but then I would have missed out on a lot of really pleasurable driving while I waited. It's also why I hope to get a Launch Edition R2 (we're day 1 reservation holders) - I'm willing to take some risk for the reward that driving the R2 is likely to bring me. YMMV

Your 2022 R1 may have two 12 volt batteries.
Mine does and its currently in service getting the batteries replaced.

The interesting thing is they're only charging me for one of them. They gave me a discount for the other battery. I wonder if its a way of trying to make it fair for those of us with the two battery solution?

The original 12V Batteries lasted 46 months and 51K miles.

I am in a G1 2023, single battery vehicle. Turns 3 next week.

I have had my 12V replaced 2x under warranty at no cost.
