At this point, it is turning to overpromising and underdelivering so hopefully once we get our hands on the R2, it will be worth it.
I personally think this is an impatient, unrealistic, and quite frankly inaccurate reading of what is occurring. They have not backtracked on anything. What has been backtracked is people's own personal assumptions. Rivian has never stated any of the things people are complaining about and then backtracked.

I understand people being upset that their own personal thoughts did not materialize how they thought they would, but that is certainly not Rivian's fault.

Yep, but did we really need two grays at launch instead of having the performance trim exclusive color be available upfront?
There are not two grays, there's a silver and a gray. And based on everything I've heard, the silver in-person is quite distinctive from the gray (much more metallic).

Completely understandable. I think they are trying to be too cautious while also trying to keep momentum going, all which is resulting in a lot of us being disappointed by the constant game of "just wait a few months!". Journalist get to review it in February. Wait another month for full details! March 12th rolls around and its like "orders start in June!" and who knows what they pull come June. Its a constant game of kicking excitement down the line and each time underdelivering while trying to be like "well, we delivered R2s in 2026!" Is that good enough?

And, well, it is. I went from I would love a red trimotor R2 with white interior to I just want an R2. The bar keeps dropping with each update and so does my excitement. The R2 Launch Edition is a great bargain. Main thing keeping me interested but I can totally commiserate with you in that this sucks. At this point, it is turning to overpromising and underdelivering so hopefully once we get our hands on the R2, it will be worth it.
I agree it is a great bargain, but the color is actually one of my top priorities compared to the rest of the package. I was ready to accept a color I didn't love assuming Borealis wasn't going to be an option. My other option was Rivian Blue. I would have taken red or yellow. I wanted bright colors. Not quite what I wanted but I was happy with a stand out color. Catalina is too dark and I'm not a fan of green (which Catalina cove leans towards). My options have now become black, white, grey, and green, leaving Catalina as a default. Purple is my favorite color and was so excited. Since the launch came with so much extra, it was worth it, but now... who knows. If Borealis costs 500 to upgrade, I'll get performance still but if they do what they've done with the R1 series and charge 2k+ I don't know. Technically I could afford it, but I work a job and a half and now joining the reserves too. I rather the extra money go towards an emergency fund or something. I know it seems stupid when 4-6k on a 60k car isn't much of an additional cost, but when everything from streaming, to food, to housing, is "just a little bit more" and so much are non-negotiable increases, I got to cut off somewhere.

Sorry to everyone who's reading my complaints. Just got to get them out. Don't have a significant other to complain to at home so lucky you guys. 🤣

Yes and no. Are expectations (my own) been high? Sure. Has Rivian been delivering on their promises? Eh. We can disagree, but I'll outline the record since you responded to something not directed at you. I also never said they backtracked. Just underdelivered. Very different.

Examples - Why did I expect a trimotor? Rivian touted a single, dual and trimotor version for the R2 when it was announced and on the website up until recently. 300+ miles of range and 0-60 in under 3s. That is gone. Okay, I can live with that. Will likely come later. Also don't get me started on the whole Osborne Effect that may have been caused by announcing the new chip and lidar that will not come with the R2 at launch.

Next was the big March 12th date they kept hyping up. It came and went with no configurator, just pictures and the expected lineup to come. No $45k model as announced for so long. They said that will come in 2027. When in 2027? Who knows, but certainly not in 2026. Completely understand people being very upset about that.

Deliveries coming Spring of 2026! Woohoo! Does anyone else still call June Spring? That is a stretch. Not a lie, but a stretch.

Next was the launch edition colors. 8 color options? Great. Two interiors options? Fine. Oh, the premier color won't be a launch color, forest green is later and so is the white interior? When is later?

Now is Rivian at fault for any of this? Matter of opinion based on our post. You seem to disagree and I do want to put some partial blame on them. I do still love the company and am a huge advocate for the R2, but I was validating the original poster in being upset. As she was justified and is allowed to have an opinion.

Excuse the long rant but I found your comment slightly condescending and invalidating to anyone who feels otherwise.

You are allowed to complain. A lot of us do and we are allowed to. Unfortunately not many people I get to complain to in my day to day and my SO just amuses me but not very interested in Rivian overall lol guess we all have to wait until June now to see how much the additional colors are going to be. I wanted red but since not available, I would have been happy with Catalina Cove with white interior, then was like fine forest green and am now deciding on launch green but depends on the upcharge as well.

At least it will only be a few options though! Seems like most things do come standard, specially on the launch edition, so that is nice! Just a matter of what colors you can live with, and it sounds like you are like me, and that matters to us more than most.

Wasn't it at SXSW?
Nah, they had all the colors but the Esker Silver and Forest Green. Forest Green missing makes sense knowing what we know now. Esker Silver on the other hand...WHERE IS IT? I think the R2 prototype was last painted that color but would love to see it on the finished product.

I apologize but it feels to me that a lot of these complaints people are having come across as a bit whiney and entitled. Rivian never promised anyone any of the things you or others have listed. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions; I certainly don't disagree with that. But other people are also allowed to have opinions and discuss and debate them. After all this is an internet forum for discussion.

I think people also need to realize this is a sub $60k and also sub $50k car. These hearkens back to the days of Tesla when they were selling luxury vehicles and then moved into mass market cars. You're not paying $100k+ anymore so the expectations of the brand have to ratchet wayyy down. People used to view Tesla's luxury; now it's just a mainstream brand. That is where Rivian is headed.

Underdelivering and backtracking are the same thing; it is a purely semantical argument. Underdelivering implies there was something promised to be delivered that wasn't delivered...aka backtracking.

The trimotor is coming just at a later date, which again was never promised to be available at launch.

Additionally, June is Spring. Spring is March 20 - June 20, give or take 1-2 days each year, as defined by the dates of the vernal equinox and summer solstice. That's not my opinion; that is literally the dates of spring. In Maine it sure doesn't feel like spring in April. But in June it does :)

I'm sorry you felt attacked so I apologize for that. The only point I was making is these are all personal opinions and feelings, which are totally valid to have, I'm not saying they aren't. But Rivian didn't underdeliver or backtrack, they never promised these things to begin with. Which again, it's not that these things aren't going to be available. They're just not available on the very first ones off the line. I struggle to see how that is unreasonable.

Edit: I should add coming from Tesla, Rivian seems to be light years ahead on their promises vs. you know who and his promises :CWL:

I'm sorry that you feel that way and are upset about not having purple available at launch. Hopefully you'll see catalina cove in person and love it!

Borealis was explicitly stated as being available and was shown at SXSW (unlike Forest Green) so it is a surprise it has now been removed.

I had my heart set on purple and light interior. Might be willing to give on either, but not both. I can always wrap it.

Do you have a source document or video you could provide that states it was "explicitly stated as being available" at launch"? I will apologize to those if so.

There are a lot of 'now' people in the feed. I was always told 'good things come to those who wait'. I am also a late reservation holder. I am waiting. I would not kick an LE out bed. But I am willing to wait for my version of perfection.
