Are There Alternatives to Rivian Level2 Charger?

I did try my mobile (plug-in) Tesla charger and it would never get past the handshake. Did not work.

On my Gen 1 R1T, the Tesla Mobile charger works (with an adapter), but it does take about 15-30 seconds to go from red to green (on the truck side).

You don't need that one anymore for $600 btw. You can just buy the Tesla/NACS one for $450.

I’d use whatever is cheapest. They are all about the same. I used the portable on an existing 30a circuit for many years, and several of my friends still do.

I did a look at the Grizzl-E (thanks for the recommendations, @Aardvark @lefkonj @sparked @VandalSibs ) and I see they released an 80amp version. Though to myself why. The 800amp architecture (Volvo, MB, BMW) can use it and it can fully charge (99%) the car in 4-6 hours. DAM! Costs the same as the Rivian branded charger, DAM, DAM!! and would future proof, mic drop!

I really hate cutting/bleeding edge tech.

I can't think of many vehicles that can accept near 80 amps over AC - maybe the Silverado/Denali EV trucks?

Model S did back in the day, but that got changed pretty early on, to my recollection...

Roger I have a Rivian Charger at home and an EVDANCE charger at a second home. I bought the EVDANCE in 2024 and it is mounted on a fence and exposed to the elements since then. I've been very happy with the EVDANCE and it is very well priced on Amazon. I found the NACS Connector version of my charger- link is below.

For what it's worth, my local energy company (Xcel) will only give a rebate if the charger is less than 50 amps. It's in the fine print of the $500 rebate for having a licensed electrician install the charger (they don't give a rebate for purchase of the charger).

In eager anticipation of ordering an R2 Premium, the reality of needed an in-home level 2 charger is obvious. According to the Rivian Store, their level 2 charger is currently at $800 without installation. I have found several reputable companies offering level 2 charges for almost half the cost.

What are your feelings. Should I use a Rivian charger, or is it safe to go with another? In either case, the charger and 50A 240V line from my circuit panel will be installed by me.

I bought the Rivian charger. It integrates with the Rivism mobile application but the functionality is minimal--close to useless. The rivian charger is reliable and trouble free but it's dumb. I had a Tesla Powerwall installed and I was dissspointed to learn that the charger would not integrate with my solar system. I regret buying the Rivian charger.

Use whatever reputable branded charger you can get a decent price whether hard wired or 14-50 plugged. Rivian, Tesla, Chargepoint are all good choices. I have a Charge point Flex (off Amazon) and it's great with the ability to switch from j1772 to NACS quickly if we ever become a consistent family (have both).

I really like my ChargePoint level 2 charger. It’s one of the few that can easily change connector and cables. I originally installed it to charge my 2024 Kia EV6 via J1772 connector. When I purchased my 2026 R1S in March. I went to ChargePoint’s site and ordered a replacement NACS connector cable for $99. Took me 10 minutes to install the new cable. Its was a seamless transition.

I have the Autel Maxicharger NACS. App works well, plug and charge available as well as turned off for security.

I have the J version and absolutely love it. Since winter of 2023 it has worked flawlessly with no failures. We love the remote holster for our garage configuration and it is a nice app that let's you track all the sessions and the cost of charging. We are showing zero wear on the cable or connector as well.

I would buy another one tomorrow if I needed one, especially if I needed it outside or at a rental since it is all weather and you can control access to it through the remote.
