I'm another Model Y owner who has an R2 reservation (as well as a Slate). My MY is a 2021 LR model with 89k miles, so I suspect that I'll be getting an R2 right around the time it turns over 100k... I want to give it a year or so for some of the bugs to be worked out. I bought my MY after about a year of production and the car has been great. Hoping for the same with the R2. I'll probably keep the MY as a second car until I can get a Slate.

I have 2022 MYP and will look at R2 when its available. No rush. Interesting more in performance than off road. Don't care about FSD.

Every time Elon gets brought up, the thread goes to $hit and doesn't comeback to the original subject.

Do you own a Tesla and are you or are you not trading in for R2?
I don’t own any Tesla because they look like $hit both inside and out, including their CEO. I have been trading in one Rivian for another since 2022 and will continue to do so. My next trade in will be a Porsche for an R2 Performance LE.

I never thought I'd buy another vehicle that wasn't a Tesla, but they seem to be FULLY in on autonomy and don't really care about their product lines anymore. A CyberSUV using the Cybertruck platform would be awesome, but they won't do it. They'll probably stop making vehicles altogether in the next decade or so. I could care less about Elon either way, but the hate for him is so overblown IMO. Everyone has their rose colored glasses on on both sides of it.

Once Rivian switched to NACS and got to the ability to make an "affordable" vehicle with the R2 (economies of scale) I started giving them a heavy look. R1S looks like a hearse or a Hyundai Santa Fe so I never wanted one, much less for $100k.

I am for sure getting a green R2 though but will be waiting til EOY or early 2027 for Gen3 autonomy. I made that mistake before with Tesla hardware so waiting a little longer for the new hardware won't hurt me. Probably won't even be able to order one until then anyways due to the R2 backlog.

FSD on my AI4 Model 3 is fantastic, so I may miss that a little bit on road trips. As long as Rivian can get something close to it I'll be fine; seems like they will. Rivian will also be the beneficiary of learning from Tesla's mistakes on camera resolution and processing power needed for L3/L4, as already seen with the compute capability of their RAP chip coming soon.

No one else does software like Tesla. They are #1 comfortably. Rivian is a distant 2nd am hoping the R2 closest the gap further. Other intangibles like working PAAK, consistent software updates, durable materials, linear acceleration and well calibrated drivetrain including smooth OPD, a decent frunk and subtrunk - this IMO is what makes a good EV versus an ICE car gone electric - is where Tesla and now Rivian should be able to hang their hat on. Getting really hard to consider other alternatives when you get an EV that is good at being an EV and it just works.

TLDR: The R2 is the best alternative to the Model Y. If you want something substantially different than the Model Y, don't think the R2 will scratch that itch (for better or for worse).
This is the one thing I am worried about, but the videos I've seen of the software it seems very good. I won't be able to buy one until end of 2026 or early 2027 anyways as they ramp up production so I'll get to see lots of YouTube reviews first anyways.

The one thing I will say is that the Model Y has never felt like an SUV to me. It's ground clearance is low and the shape is very bloated sedan like. The R2 should feel and drive much more like an SUV. The lack of an egg shape will also make the interior and cargo space feel far more spacious also. It looks like it is from the early reviews I've seen on YouTube also.

I'm with you. I love the Teslas i've had but I'd rather have an R2 than a Model Y. Also, since they won't make a Plaid Model Y, I'll have to settle for a tri-motor R2 :)

Have you test driven an R2? If not, outside of a driver’s display, these would be assumptions still. I hope they’re true, though.
I'm sure they're using standard rain sensors everyone other than Tesla is using so the wipers should work just fine.

2025 model y perf vs r2
LE R2 - Reason being, too many Teslas around me between neighbors and coworkers, I just want something different. Also, the interior and exterior styling is better. Reliability is still up for debate but I'm will to take that risk. :)

That's assuming that people actually use their crossovers to their max capacity. My wife is a teacher, and she drives a Model Y. It is hardly ever fully loaded with crap in the back -- just her, her work bag, and her big-a$$ Stanley cup.

I'd argue that most people don't buy crossovers because they want to fit as much stuff as possible in their vehicles — they just like the "security" of all-wheel drive and sitting up high.

Given that the Model Y has been around for about 6 years, and is one of the best sellers in the country, it is no longer "alien." For better or worse, it's become "normal"; otherwise, it wouldn't be selling in the numbers it does.

Personally, I think the Model Y is pretty damn ugly (even owning one), but it "works" as an everyday commuter.
It only takes one odd shaped item now and then to make the R2 to make a more useful vehicle. People have been buying pickups for decades based on the occasional need for the ability to do that odd thing from time to time. The R2 will appeal to a different set of people.

Model Y, R2 Reservation
I'm new to this forum and love my 2026 Model Y. I've also like the Rivian for their practical size with off-road capabilities. The R2 Launch is on my short list since it easily fits in my garage. I'm cross shopping against a Model Y Performance, base Cybertruck, and Scout EV.

BTW, surprised by the amount of political banter in this thread. I'm a huge fan of Elon Musk. He is responsible for the most successful US based EV brand, recycles rockets, donates Starlink access to Ukraine and others catastrophes, helps paraplegic's regain the ability to engage, rescues people from the space station, etc.. Believe he deserves at least a Nobel Peace prize....

But...the Cybertruck would be a tight fit in the garage, the R1 is more than I need, and the R2 would provide a unique contrast to my outstanding Model Y. Still not sure about giving up FSD, but like the idea that I can get Autonomous + bundled with the Launch package.

Ioniq 5 (R2 Reservation)
Last year I traded in my Tesla Model 3 and leased a Hyundai Ioniq 5 while I wait for the R2. I truly miss my Model 3 more than any car I have ever sold/traded in (I am glad to be disassociated with Tesla and Elon). The Ioniq 5 has been a bit of a disappointment. I am hoping that the R2 will make me completely forget about my Model 3.

Lots of good juicy hyperbole here.
