Would you still buy your Rivian today?

Since this thread got resurrected, it got me to thinking... after buying 3 R1s (two of which we still have) my answer has switched to a definitive "no" and I am looking seriously at replacing both far sooner than I ever though I would. It is not just because of service issues (though that has been a bit of a pain) but because of the tech. I would not buy another 400V vehicle. The pain on road trips is too real for me. And I do not like being nickel-and-dimed on subscription bs. I am also severely tired of the over-promise/underdeliver on the ADAS systems. The bad efficiency is a daily pita and the overstated range is a source of deep irritation from my wife. So no, not unless Rivian makes a few technical and business model pivots.

That is the "would I buy again" answer. The "will I keep these" answer is a much more painful also "no." The reliability is too low and the repair costs are too high and too difficult to deal with (on day 7 without our R1S this morning) to own an out-of-warranty Rivian and at this point I am not interested in buying a third party insurance plan. The annual operating cost (insurance, electricity, routine maintenance) is also much higher than other EVs that would suite our needs and it all just adds up.

So, wow, I guess I've been transformed from a huge fan who dropped 270k on the brand to (sometime in the next two years) a disappointed former owner. Not great.

As much as I loved my R1, as someone who recently sold it, I guess the answer is no.

The charging and range need to be better along with long term reliability. I do think Rivian can work these out. I knew going in that this was a gen 1 product so as such, had to deal with growing pains.

Can Rivian figure it out and will I buy one down the line? More than likely. Waiting to see how things shake out after the R2 launch.

I'd still recommend it though depending on your needs and will reaffirm that growing pains are still a thing.

My husband recently hit 6 months with his Tesla Model Y. He has never had anything wonky happen to it, or had to perform any variation of a reboot. Now, granted, the Tesla OS has a good decade or so of evolution more than the Rivian OS, but revisiting this question made me pause and think.

Idunno? My R1T has been driving well, other than the past day or so when it went into hard, Narcoleptic mode and would not wake up (of course, it was raining and I had my arms full of grocery bags when I then had to dig out my phone and hit the unlock button on the app). But hey.

I own a Gen 1 R1S with 25,000 miles on it. I absolutely love it. It ticks all of the boxes: fast, beautiful, high utility, good ride, lots of room, off road capable, etc. The only problems I have had had to do with the auto closing on my frunk and tailgate (adjustments needed) and the replacement of my 12 volt battery (recall by Rivian). I Iove the tech on the car and the updates. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

Despite my current complaints in other threads on this forum, yes. We wanted to make the all EV jump, have ridiculously low electricty rates here (YAY MUNICIPAL UTILITIES!!), but also need significant towing capacity. Oh, and it's fun to drive.

After ~5 months with my R1S...I'm not sure. And it almost all comes down to the suspension, and how it's not smooth/quiet at around-town speeds no matter what I do, regardless of whether I have 20" or 22" wheels, etc. I love almost everything else about it (some minor build quality issues aside, like the crappy-sounding doors), but I cannot stop being annoyed by a suspension that Rivian says is operating normally.

The problem is, I don't know what else I would get. I want a good looking design and good range, but I also want the ability to haul stuff, strap things to the roof, etc. Need three rows. Probably the closest other EV option is the new Cadillac Vistiq but it's too soft-roader for me, too luxury focused and not enough utility focused. And it doesn't have a frunk!! I love my frunk. Also I'm only "meh" on the Vistiq's looks, especially the back end.

If something else comes along in the three-row EV segment that strikes the right balance of utility and comfort (and style), I'll probably sell the R1S. My ideal vehicle would be an R1S with a more traditional (but still mildly off-road capable) suspension.

I've had my R1T for about 2 months and around 2500 miles. I really like my truck, everything about it is great! I even had a really good experience with the Raleigh service center.

Would I buy again? Well, I bought mine used, that was really the only way because I refuse to spend the kind of money Rivian is asking for a new one. I stand by what I've said the last couple years on this forum. If Rivian offered the R1T and R1S (I need a full size vehicle for towing my boat, not the small/midsize R2) with a standard coil spring suspension I would not hesitate to buy again.

Buy again? Yes. (Even if I paid full price for mine, no discount!)

Keep until the wheels fall off? Not unless I've bought an extended warranty. The amount of warranty fixes I've had done already is insane.

Until there is a rapid charging 500 mile version, I'll stick with my Gen 1 R1T Dual.

Agreed, that's probably when I switch, extended warranty until then.
