How many cars have you owned that require a new battery every 12-24 months?
Had a V6 rav4 that ate batteries every 24 months. Somehow my 2022 R1T is still on the first batteries. Wish I knew what the secret is.

Mine does and its currently in service getting the batteries replaced.

The interesting thing is they're only charging me for one of them. They gave me a discount for the other battery. I wonder if its a way of trying to make it fair for those of us with the two battery solution?

The original 12V Batteries lasted 46 months and 51K miles.
This is exactly what it is though, depending on advisor, they spin it as only charging for one battery or not charging for labor. My invoice (with tax) was still over $500, so that's still a pretty damn expensive battery if they only charge for one.

I thought I read somewhere RJ capped the battery cost because it was bad PR to have customers upset with replacing batteries and spending over $1000. $500 is still pretty crazy for two motorcycle batteries.

For reference - Ohmmu is single $366+19 or dual $500+19

Just an update, I had the service visit today and was charged a total of $478.99. This included $292.80 for one battery (the second battery was provided at no cost under Rivian’s new policy for Gen 1 vehicles), $218.50 for labor, plus tax. Since I paid for the new battery(s?), they should be covered under a 2-year/24,000-mile warranty. However, because the previous 12V battery was replaced under warranty, that coverage followed the original 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and has now expired.

Thanks for following up. The cost seems excessive. I purchased a few (2 for the R1T with 2 batteries and 1 for the R1S with one) sets of the adapters that allow one to use an off the shelf battery preemptively.

If you’re able, could you redact your address/personal info and share your invoice? I’m replacing my battery set again (out of warranty) and want to make sure I’m getting charged the same rate you paid.

I’d be curious if there is a relationship between the number of miles driven and battery consumption. I drive between 20-25k a year. i see an awefull lot of low mileage Rivians. My 2023 R1T is on her second battery. The first year it wasn’t driven much

Four batteries, right about normal (US average) number of miles.

I’m going with the Ohmmu Sodium dual‑battery setup. They’re in Prescott, AZ, so basically in my backyard. Plenty of people have done the install with zero issues, including clearing codes.

The only gamble for me is if the batteries fail before 24,000 miles / 24 months, which would still fall under Rivian’s free replacement window for a lead‑acid swap anyway. Still a no‑brainer, for me.

Once the batteries show up (Wed/Thur), the whole install should take about an hour. Total, cost ends up a bit less than having Rivian do everything.

And remember that that timer does not reset when replaced under warranty. Once you pay out of pocket, the warranty is only 24mo/24k.
So, having gone through 4 (count ’em) 4 12 volt batteries since 3/2023 I was told I had to pay for the 4th battery despite the fact that it was three days shy of 24 mos useage. Do I now have a 24 mos/24K warranty? Rivian did not volunteer this information when presented with invoice.

Yes. Your original 12v warranty (3 year, 36k) would have expired a few months back which is why you had to pay for the 4th.

Replacement by Rivian should come with a 2yr warranty

I'm on my 4th one. '23 R1S with 27k. Original one died on the driveway around year one. 6 months later they did a preemptive replacement and this year in April they did another preemptive replacement. I only had issues with the first one but Rivian keeps replacing them. I'm a bit concerned with what happens once out of warranty.
