Enough potential difference between the two batts and a large current flow with sparks flying or even a battery explosion could occur. Going forward, if they indeed go with a single 12V battery, there should be no reason the two vehicle half's can't be connected via a positive bridge cable or terminal block connection (and they already share a common negative ground circuit).
