New to Rivian, and need advice. Any help is appreciated!
I just purchased a used Rivian from a private seller. It is in beautiful condition. No service history of concern so it hasn't had any issues of note in the first 18K miles.

I just took possession of it having had it shipped to me. Seems the seller possibly forgot to put it in shipping mode (shipping mode wasn't turned on when I received it) and it was very cold during transport over two days. It abnormally lost a lot of battery during transport (went from 200 to 140miles). When the truck arrived the 12v battery warning light was on.

It is still on now after charging it and driving it for about 15 minutes on the highway. Rivian won't let me setup a service appointment because the ownership transfer in the app hasn't gone through and can take "up to 7 days".

Is it unsafe to drive it with the 12v light on. Am I at risk of bricking it if I drive...or if I don't drive it? Or is it worse to just let it sit in the garage? Will plugging it in help?
Not new to EVs but these are new problems specific to this vehicle.

Thanks much for you knowledge and advice!

I wouldn't drive it anywhere you can't walk home from!

If you have a 12V battery charger at home you could try that on the two (or possibly one 12V bat for post march 2023 builds) batteries. Riding around for 15 min is not a lot of time to charge the 12V batts back up.

They are pretty aggressive about maintaining a failing battery but there's only so much that can be done. Could be fine or you could end up stranded. If Rivian won't let you make a service appointment that doesn't bode well for roadside.

Have you tried a hard reset?

In the beta update notes, Rivian mentions some low-battery warnings might be erroneous. But I also would not drive it with the battery warning on.

Ask the previous owner if she/he would submit the service ticket for you?

The ownership transfer can take up to 7-10 days.

Saw your post in another forum that the driver's seat belt was clipped the entire time the vehicle was shipped. As you've learned, this is a "no no" as the vehicle thinks someone is sitting in the seat and will never go to sleep (HVAC continues running, etc.). Same for the passenger seat.

Hopefully it just needs a charge and reboot.

I had my 12 volt and asked the same questions. Gradually it led to more and more warning lights and ultimately I was driving home and the whole dash lit up and my truck went into slow mode where I couldn’t go over 44 mph on the highway. Bottom line is the 12v is covered under warranty and you should have them replaced asap.

The warning light might be a result of the cold weather during transport affecting the battery. And I think you should avoid driving with the 12v warning light on, as it could impact various systems in your ride. But, maybe, plugging it in could indeed help stabilize the battery systems.

OP should be covered as warranty on 12v is 3 years or 36k miles...whichever comes first.

They called me yesterday and said they need to determine it if was neglect to see if they are going to make me pay for it or charge me for it. Anyone dealt with this before? This isn't something that was neither my fault nor the seller's fault if the shipper plugged in the seatbeat and left it plugged for two days in the cold. From what I have heard about costs of Rivian service, this is probably going to be more expensive than it was to ship the truck to me so zero chance the shipper will take responsibility.

Not sure. Rivian stance on this is not good in my opinion. To me as long as the traction battery hasn't gone below zero, then the system should close the traction battery contacts and charge the 12v system.

But Rivian uses language with lots of wiggle room that says "12v batteries may be damaged or drained if vehicle left unplugged for an extended period of time".

What does that even mean? Extended can mean literally anything.
And why? If the traction battery has a usable SOC then why does vehicle need to be plugged in to maintain the 12v system?

Makes no sense to me and I feel Rivian is being unfair of they are charging people who had 12v failure, but didn't take traction battery to 0% SOC.
