I got my truck less than a week ago and don't have a way to charge at home yet except a 120 outlet. We have a DCFC associated with our local utility and CharePoint that is close that I charged at today. I set the charger as a destination and saw the message of pre-conditioning. When I got to the charger I was around 32% SOC. A little learning curve, even though I have a ChargePoint account, I got too close with my iPhone and paid that way. I wasn't sure if the first plug-in was correct and unplugged right as it started to charge, so had to re-start. I finally got it going and I saw it peak above 200 and then as expected it back down at 80% to the 130 - 150. All in all a good first charge, added 84 kWh in 1 hr 13 min around $36.

Nice.

if possible, I would definitely work on getting a home charging solution setup. You paid close to $0.43/kWh. That’s about average for DC Fast Charging (CCS), but you would probably be paying something like $0.12/kWh at home or a 72% lower rate for the same energy. I’ll pay whatever the going rate is at fast chargers while on a road trip (paying for the fast charge convenience), but want the cheaper rate for daily driving.

Welcome to the club! The first time is always the hardest as you figure out how it works. My wife worked with our guide (August 2023) and we were able to have our Rivian charger shipped to us a couple weeks before we took delivery - that gave me time to get the electrician to the house the day before we picked up our S to install the charger.

You'll love your ride and the charging infrastructure is only going to keep getting better.

Have an electrician coming next week to tell me how much for an outlet here at the house. It is the long term goal.

I am a recent R1T buyer - first EV - I had the Tesla Universal Wall connector installed and it works great with Rivian and has both NACS and CCS for future proofing.

My advice would be to get more than one quote for your install as there was a about a $900 range in the estimates I got.

So far I have had an online quote and an in person quote and they have been the same. It will be interesting what the next one is.

We had an electrician install a 14-50 outlet. It has worked well for our MYP and R1S. We pay .24 for electricity during 9 pm to 4pm. Must be nice to pay .12.

Get it wired for #6 THHN unless you have a main panel smaller than 100A. Even then you might consider going for larger wire even if you have to dial back the charger due to your load calc. It's harder to rewire later if you want to swap panels, chargers or breakers. About half your panel size seems to be about the most the average home can allocate.

I have 2 200 amp panels and will have a 60 amp breaker and wire installed. I might have to have a serious discussion with the electrician about loading, but I know it is one I can win.

Where I live we have a monthly $24 customer charge and off-peak we pay $.08+. On-peak is closer to $.12, but I won’t charge then.

Welcome to the club! My biggest tips for a new EV owner are:
  1. Charge often, especially at home when rates are low
  2. Leave your charge limit as low as you can unless you're roadtripping, 70% is usually a good choice. Charging up to 90% or even 100% every once in a while on a roadtrip won't hurt! Just don't do it regularly
  3. Don't leave the battery full or hot for a long time! This is what causes the most degradation over the shortest period of time. The colder the battery, and the lower the state of charge, the longer it will maintain its capacity. This means you shouldn't charge up to almost-full on a DCFC and then immediately park the vehicle with a now-hot battery if you can avoid it
