2027 R1 Due in August - What's Changing?

I don't believe Rivian has followed the typical Auto industry of new model year in the August timeframe as of yet. I would imagine LIDAR is coming to the R1 when it hits the R2 at the end of the year. The new steering wheel maybe but not 100% convinced of that one yet.

The changes to the OS can be done with a OTA.

My guess is ‘27 is a quiet year for R1 where we’ll see one new color option, and a Dune-like special edition mid year to get us to ‘28.

I would love to have massaging seats and heads up display. Other EVs (e.g. Cadillac) have these options and I feel by Rivian adding those it should be able to win over a segment looking for some luxury features

Feel like from a supplier standpoint, switching to the new steering wheel would standardize costs somewhat. And also make the "driver experience" when going between models more uniform. Other than that... a new paint color maybe?

I would be surprised if there is anything new.

My guess is sometime mid next year they release a G3 R1 with the new computers and Lidar.

My prediction is no changes that require too much recertification or crash testing. That means probably no captains chairs or any other major structural change. They could make changes to the entertainment hardware or even steering wheel to use the same parts as R2.

Would love a non air suspension model to come out! Most of these trucks are NOT going off road - give a much more reliable and less expensive model for us pavement princess folks!

I don't see us getting the haptic wheels any time soon, on account of the entirely different software ecosystem running in the R2. I don't think Rivian builds software modularly, so the code to run the haptic wheels is likely nestled very deep in the R2 operating system.

I actually see air suspension as a liability off road - I get that it is a cool party trick to raise the ride height, but inflating the air springs to the max actually hurts things like articulation and the ability of the suspension to absorb washboards, etc. I think the air suspension is really there more for complaint ride quality on the beat to shit roads we all have. And to be fair it does a good job of managing that task. That being said, I see eventually someone coming up with a coil over strut system to replace the Monroe air springs in the R1 platform once we get a bit more into the "out of warranty" territory on these...

I'm sure thats true, but then you'll have to deal with all the nanny fault codes because the car can't detect or use the sensors for the air bags. I really want a model from the factory, with all the bells and whistles that it comes with normally, but with regular springs and I guess adaptive dampers are fine, but I don't even care about those either. Just want a simple set up truck to use.

I'm in the "not much is going to change" camp...

We might see changes to the rear seating, as others have said. But I don't see Rivian investing much in product updates when they're focused on new products like the R2/R3....

They need to reduce powertrain options, so it's possible they drop the dual non-performance and potentially the tri motor options. To be profitable, they need to get the price point of these higher, since R2 will cover the lower cost tier.

The things I would love to see updated in an imaginary world:
1) Actual glove boxes (like the R2)
2) Better storage in the door cards, a spot for a decent sized water bottle (hydroflask)
3) Charge port moved to rear drivers side to match R2 (better Tesla SC connectivity)
4) Ability to choose a metal roof rather than glass, or a built in retractable screen

I like the option to choose a sunroof but I prefer not to have one.
I Like the charge port up front since we tow a trailer sometimes. Not many trailer CS so have more options to leave connected

All of this. I won't buy another R1 until they get a traditional suspension. The current setup is the reason I won't keep my R1S more than a few more years. I love the size, but I want the traditional suspension. Going off road is goin to screw the air suspension up and its pricey to fix.

Is the R2 steering wheel the same overall size as the R1 wheel? If it's smaller, that might be a factor for swtiching or not.
