Luckily I have an older Honda Ridgeline so I still have transportation. I think EV rule number 1 is have backup transportation, preferrably something gas-powered.
I've been stranded when a gas car's 12V went out and it wouldn't start, too...

Yup. With all these 12v posts, kind of glad I have the dual 12v's.
Mine has dual 12v and died just the same. One battery, two batteries or 24 zillion batteries... whomever Rivian sourced them from (or whomever wrote the BMS software) has some 'splaining to do.

Not just Rivian, Teslas have 12V battery issue too. My Model 3 had a dead 12v and it was changed under warranty as well. It seems like too much tech shorten the life of the 12v battery

I have dual 12v batteries. They died on me summer 2023. Took mobile service almost 3 weeks to get to me to replace them.

I had a dead 12v on my driveway. Remote tech came and fixed it in 10 minutes. I love my Rivian but this is an achilles heal for Rivian. I wish they would proactively do something about it. OP-hope it all works out for you and this is the last issue for you.

I was hoping G2 would have gained a physical key to the cabin and then a physical frunk release from inside the cabin. Then an owner/service provider could enter the truck...pop the frunk....replace the batteries...and be ready to go again....like most every other vehicle on the road.

There are reports (multiple!) in this forum that Rivian is calling clients to replace their 12V proactively. So they know about it and they're doing something about it.

I'm assuming Rivian is replacing 12V based on availability, area, accessibility of mobile services, etc, etc.

I never thought I would be one of those people. Monday morning I had a doctor appointment and I went out to my R1T and my key fob wouldn't unlock it. The keycard and the phone app wouldn't either. I looked through the window and the screens were dark and there was no electrical activity at all. During the night it had charged to 100%. After that was when it died, because the app is reporting 100% charge. I called Rivian and they tried what they could. Tomorrow a tow truck is going to pick it up and haul it to the service center in Salt Lake, 95 miles away. I had driven it the day before and it was totally normal. There was no warning at all.

I'm wondering what sort of problems are involved in loading a dead Rivian onto a tow truck. Can you push it or pull it?

So sorry to hear this! It happened to my R1T…. Fully charged, o warning and I was at our cabin in a remote location. Rivian towed the truck and paid for a rental but I was pretty unhappy about my beloved R1T. Turns out that rodents had chewed through the wiring harness. I was glad that the fundamental problem wasn’t electromechanical and so happy with Rivian service and communication throughout.

The difference with Tesla 12V failure is that they come to your house, replace it, and charge you $130. I know complaints are over represented on forums. I hope the R2 I’m waiting for won’t have this stuff. I might fall for an Audi Q6 first. Continuing with my Tesla M3 L/R for now.

LOL!! I've been stranded by gas cars a few times, not by an EV...yet.

Sounds like you haven't tried jumping or charging the 12v battery? Do you have something that can (battery charger, jump pack, any other 12v source)?

Michael came and picked up my car today. He was so nice. If you tried to imagine who you would want taking care of your $100,000 car, Michael would be it. He explained what he was doing and all the cables and things. I was very impressed. Of course, he is just one cog in the big Rivian service machine. The service center is 95 miles away in Salt Lake City. He showed me his instructions from the service center and it said very plainly, "Do not try to jump the battery." He didn't try to get inside the car at all. He has had a lot of experience with Rivians.
