Just thought of a question when reading DM vs QM thread. How much of a size difference is there between the two types of motors? Will the Bosch motors be available in 5 years? If one of our units goes bad, could they replace the Bosch ones with an Enduro? I’m assuming they would have to replace them in pairs if it was even possible.. or maybe it would have to be all 4 at the same time?

Apologies if this has come up before and I missed it.

1 Enduro motor takes up the space of both Bosch motors. I think the quad motor that will replace Bosch is actually going to be separate from Enduro and made in house. RJ alluded to this during an MKBHD interview.

Quite a bit of difference in size. All OEM’s have to make parts available for at least 10 years so yes, parts will be available. No, a quad motor Bosch couldn’t be replaced an enduro.

dont quote me on this but i think Munro had a dual motor in their office that Rivian had sent over and from what i recall the actual motors aren't the same size but they built the housing so that it'd fit in the same space as the bosch quad motors most likely to simplify production. if they go to quad enduro motors i would think it'd be built to fit in the same space as well unless they do a redesign/overhaul of the drivetrain. not likely in the near future.

i know they are shutting down for a week or so in April/May to implement new production/design but i think thats related to the wiring/network architecture, not the motors.

Rotor and stator appear to be pretty similar in size but the packaging is wildly different.

No-one will be able to just drop in a replacement, too much software involved.

Ahh gotcha! Thanks for the info! I was curious because I’ve read about a possible future Enduro Quad and figure they might be similar in size.

I figured some of you members would know the more technical stuff for sure! Thanks!

I would hope this is the situtation. Some may not realize that the housing contains both the motor and the inverter, etc. It would be prudent design to use the same housing and just redesign it internally to house an Enduro motor instead of a Bosch for backward compatibility. As a shareholder, I would be really disappointed in Rivian Engineering if the housing was different and therefore the mounting points, etc. were all different making this impossible.

I don't have any insider knowledge that causes me to doubt your claim that the Spring shutdown is purely to update the wiring/network architecture, but I am curious how you reached this conclusion?

Because that is what Rivian announced it was for? And the official Rivian announcement carries some weight, because they're a public company. If this is not their intention, then that would be fraud.

Rivian announced that the Spring shutdown was solely related to updating the wiring/network architecture, and nothing else? My understanding is that Rivian's announcement wasn't that specific, but I am far from an expert on this topic and I appreciate any additional, informed insight.

I more or less confirmed this internally as well. But I could certainly be wrong. However, the cell chemistry change info was spot on so......

Per the CFO Claire McDonough:
Major changes on the horizon
As indicated before, Rivian is preparing to apply some changes to the R1-series EVs. The CFO said the factory will "experience some downtime" in the summer of 2024, which will be used to simplify the pickup truck and the SUV. The Irvine-based manufacturer is moving onto a simpler network architecture that reduces the number of parts (mainly ECUs) needed by about 60%. That allows the brand to also shorten the wiring harnesses by around 25%.

The R1T and R1S will get new batteries boasting the lithium iron phosphate chemistry. They have a lower energy density, but these energy storage units are considered safer because they are more durable and don't start wildly burning when interacting with oxygen. That's great news for those who often use DC fast chargers.

First of all, this is a CFO talking and I don't think she says specifically that it's the LFP battery coming out.

Second, I believe it's the LFP battery coming out.
