That is a great question. None of the winners of the grants were charging companies, though EVgo, Tesla, and ChargePoint applied. Most of the applicants seems like they were gas stations. Obviously, they are going to have to order chargers from a charging company.

In MT and SD a lot of the grants went to power companies.

It will be interesting to see how each state awards the money allocated to build chargers from the bipartisan infrastructure bill. I hope they put some thought into where stations should go and how many chargers at each station. Most importantly, I hope there is a system to prevent fraud and that the money is actually used to build chargers. Anytime the government is giving out free money, all the criminals come out to steal it. I have been reading the news lately about the billions of dollars of PPP money and unemployment money stolen and it is maddening.

My guess is the gas stations will partner with an existing charging partner (EA, EvGo, Chargepoint). The station is likely to make money on people stopping in and buying stuff until they’re charged.

On the projects awarded list, Landmark, TPG, and Equilon are all Timewise locations and currently part of the JV with Shell. Based on the award amount, I expect to see a combination of four 350/150 chargers operated on the Shell reCharge platform.

Bucee’s was made for EV charging stations. With that, they have an audience that is captive for at least 30 minutes. With gas, the customer is almost always gassed up before they even walk into the store. They can turn around at any moment. IMO, this is just a big win for them.

So I had to google that a bit. I saw articles on one Scheels getting Tesla superchargers but is that a a common trend? Our Scheels, in Loveland, doesn’t have any.

They are massive travel centers alongside interstates. But obviously that means they compete with anything else on that stretch of road.
