Finally got my NACS adapter recently.

Do I just show up at a Tesla Supercharger and expect it to know my R1S and pull payment from Rivian, or do I need to use the Tesla app to charge?

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
As long as you have your credit card on your Rivian account, plug-and-charge should work fine.

If you have the Tesla subscription, then you need to initiate the charge from the app before plugging in.

Super simple. I've used it 3x and was flawless each time.

I agree with the CC on file w/Riv process.

I used my free adapter, for the 1st time, yesterday at a Tesla supercharger in New London, CT. It was plug and play, errh pay. But, damn, so expensive.

This is true and applies to Electrify America, EVgo and other memberships. If you are not a frequent user, no need to pay for a membership.

The cost may be cheaper if you initiate the charge from the Tesla account ap prior to plugging in to your rivian.

First time road trip and first use of Tesla charger. Drove my 24 R1T (quad) from Baton Rouge, LA to Bentonville Arkansas. roughly 500 miles.

Attempted to use the Tesla Charger located next to our RAN superchargers in BR but it would just say "starting" on the Rivian. Moved over to the RAN and got free supercharging before the road trip. (Don't know how long it will continue-was told it would be free for 2 years but can't verify that -to be free but currently when i charge at RAN's its a zero charge on my account). To be fair to the Tesla charger - it does not come up on Rivian app as a viable option. I was still a little nervous because the Rivian app had us charging at w separate Tesla chargers.

Rivian Nav wanted to break this 500 mile trip into 4 charges - most about 15-22 minutes each. I was fully charged at 330 miles on conserve so i thought it was a bit much. However, my truck was entirely packed for the trip including a Kuat two bike rack with MTB's on it. My efficiency when driving 75-80 on the interstate was about 1.75 so i was burning through some fuel.

One stop included a high speed XOVA charger which requires the app for use and does not have any contact pay at charger. For some reason, we could not download the app (tried both me and my wife's phone) so we headed down the road to a slower charger in the next town - got five miles down the road and the app allowed us to download it, went back to the XOVA and bam - in business.

When i got to both of the Tesla spots - one is the Tesla super charger setup in Little Rock which is next to about 10 restaurant options (this will be a usual stop now on this repeat road trip) i DID NOT use the tesla app, i just plugged it in the adapter and charging commenced shortly. I got emails from RIVIAN with my tesla charger details and costs. No TESLA app is neccessary in any way.

Overall - great road trip. I did this trip in March in my Ford Raptor with wife and dog, including gas stops and stops for the pup to walk around in 11-1/2 hours. This trip, including a couple of directional snafus took us right at 12 hours but that included a 45 minute stop at Walkon's from some Black Jack Pirate black ale and wings.

That is not a V3 charger, it is V2 and is not a compatible Tesla charger.

I figured as much. The RAN chargers are relatively new and I had no idea when the tesla chargers were put in. They look like at the same time but for all i know they may have been there for years -

Not all Tesla superchargers are open to Rivian. Always check the app or in car nav

Yep, from what I see it is 5 to 10 cents cheaper to initiate through the Tesla app if you have a subscription (e.g., 38¢/kW vs 43¢/kW, or ~12% cheaper).

If you don't have a Tesla subscription, I think it is probably the same price.

I have noticed that the Tesla superchargers in my area have variable time-of-day surge pricing. Don't know how that might affect the differential rates.
