So after only 1 year and 18k miles, I already need new front tires. Maybe 50% of that driving was done using conserve mode.

My recommendation, do not use conserve mode unless if you have to. In our situation, conserve mode was the difference between stoping at a 50kw charger vs +100kw or having to add another stop, especially driving through Vermont or upstate NY.

I donā€™t think I would use it going forward, unless I absolutely have to. I would confess that I often forgot to turn it back to Ā« All purpose Ā» when exiting the highway. My recommendation for Rivian is to create a Ā« Smart Conserve Mode Ā» that only turns off the rear motors if over (maybe) 50mph.

Anyway, hoping my experience will help others.

We love our truck!

hi,
i dont think it has anything to do with the conserve mode.
i drive mostly on sport, 18K, front tires were slick...:), totally gone.
How are your back tires? Mine are much better. I donā€™t do sport that often, actually rarely. I do like to have fun with it but maybe once a month. But good to know that itā€™s front bias.

back tires probably had like 30-40% life left.
i went with different size/brand, so changed all 4.
went with 295/40ZR21. so far so good.
Which tires? Any rubbing with such wide tires?

I haven't used Conserve mode yet. But when I look at potential road trips, upstate New York/Vermont/Maine/New Hampshire do look pretty sparse for charging. I will probably take my 2 door Wrangler instead of the R1T to those areas, and trust me, a 2 door soft top Wrangler isn't a great road trip vehicle.

NY is not too bad but Vermont and Maine are not great.

OP, did you ever rotate your tires? Just wondering if that would help even out the wear.
I did, although I brought the truck to service and they rotate them after I did it myself šŸ˜’. I didnā€™t realize it until a couple of weeks ago when I saw the low tread. Rotating will definitely help. But still, I never experienced tires getting bold that fast. Had a model 3 for 5 years. My father in law just got his R1T and the delivery specialist told him the same thing. Conserve is bad for the tires.

My understanding is all 4 motors are the same so why can't converse mode have a selector so you can specify if you want front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

Plus rear wheel drive would give someone a quiet mode since the motors are all the way in the back.

So what i am hearing is we should conserve the use of conserve mode?

Unfortunately, EV tires still have a ways to go in terms of treadlife. The combination of weight (EVs are definitely plus sized) and acceleration is the death knell for treadwear.

Folks on here have reported that RIvian has suggested only using conserve when you absolutely need it - like road trips where you are trying to get yourself to the next charger.

Unfortunately, getting additional range from conserve can be addicting.

Wouldn't it be great if Rivian could push an update to have power come from either the front two wheels or the rear two wheels in an alternating way so you could at least have more even wear on the tread.

Is there an explanation of why conserve mode is so bad on tires?

Why is it any different than a front wheel drive vehicle? Sure I get that its a heavy vehicle, but conserve mode is likely mostly used for trips.

It's also not like conserve mode gives you enough power to do burnouts.

Was the OP seriously supposed to rotate their tires every 2 months.
