That's good to know. I've lived in CO/ WY for almost 30 years. I think the longest I've ever driven WITHOUT a cracked windshield is like 6 months. I finally replaced the one on my last truck, not because the 4 cracks that had been there over the course of 6 years, but because it had become so sandblasted from these infernal Front Range Winds, that I could no longer see when driving off into the sunset.
OP, don't worry about your windshield suddenly imploding. It's laminated glass.
Oh I feel your pain! I keep hoping my Rivian windshield will hold up long enough for there to be options outside of the service center for replacement. Since I was old enough to drive I've basically replaced my windshields every year or other year on every vehicle.

I don't think it's a ticket a cop would specifically pull you over to give you, but if you got pulled over for something else I've seen it added on if it was bad enough... Kinda BS but it happens.

San Jose, CA area. I got a small chip/star from a rock or something. Overnight that small thing cracked almost the full height of the windshield and turned at the bottom for half way across the bottom. Luckily not in any driver line of sight, so probably not illegal.

Insurance (GEICO) went fine, they agreed the windshield needed replaced, and sent a request to Rivian. I had already filed a Service Request separately, so I'm hoping those two are connected appropriately.

Here's the kicker. Now in early Feb, the first appointment available is in early May. This is getting ridiculous with this service center. I don't really blame them, but Rivian has not setup this area for success if it takes 3+ months to fix something critical like a windshield that has a giant crack. I mean at this point I'd be better off taking a hammer to it to finish it off and then they'd have to treat it like an emergency. Instead, I have to worry every day for 3 months that the windshield will just shatter or something, and at anytime. Could be I walk out and it's gone, could be while driving on the highway.
Sorry for the rant, but wanted to share my story so others in similar situations can at least not feel alone. I've talked to the service agent and they tried to do what they could, but limited. I wonder if I have any other options for recourse.
Lol. In early jan, the nearest appt in Costa Mesa, CA was mid June. So although it may seem ridiculous, it could be worse.

As you wait, ponder whether you want to spend extra on protection film, once replaced. For $600 or so, it could be the difference between crack/no crack.

Granted PITA to have to wait that long but windshields dont work like that, the safety glass will not shatter or break to a point where it loses its lamination.

Certified body shops can do the replacement. I am having it done right now in Orange County. The shop says they do them frequently, and the wait is minimal (1-2 weeks for parts only).
But doesn't Rivian still need to do sensor recalibration? That would still take months to get an appointment at Costa Mesa.

No this shop can do it.
Care to share the shop details? Many of us in OC/IE area could probably use them in the unlikely event of a windshield crack! I had some minor chips filled (for free), but dread getting a new windshield.

European motor car works did the replacement.
They were great, only had the car 1 night, they ran the calibration and everything is good.
This was the nicest auto place I have ever seen. Super clean, all high end cars including 8-10 rivians, a bunch of lucid airs, some Aston martins etc.

It is around the corner from Rivian Costa Mesa service center. Highly recommended. It did cost about $500 more than the service center.

Got a recommendation for that? I think I might want to look into it. Thanks

A quick update on this thread. After the crack started spreading, they were able to get me in quickly. It went from May 7th to April 1st due to something opening up when I called about something else, to "tomorrow".

I'm glad they were able to fix this sooner, I just wish it didn't require so many hoops to jump through in order to get here.

2000 miles driven in 90 days. On Saturday, got hit with something so small, me nor the passenger could see it. We barely heard it. Yet I have a 2 inch star burst. Been driving for 20+ years (MA and FL) and first issue I've ever had with a windshield. Safelite claims they'll only add resin because it's not larger than a dollar bill (yet). As if I want a bandaid on a vehicle with this price tag. I'm an hour from the Orlando service center so I may see what they say. Super upsetting!
