I picked up my R1T from service only to find a crack when I got home. Not blaming anyone, cause it could have happened on my drive home.
Has anyone use safelite for replacement? They do recalibrate the cameras now - according to their website. Are they using OEM glass?

My insurance is covering the replacement with Safelite and they are mobile next day service. My service center is about over a month out for windshield replacement. The crack is pretty bad - spidering throughout the windshield.

Apparently a bird poop can crack these things. Sorry to hear you’re the latest victim.

Please keep us posted on you’re Safelite experience, we may all need them.

Man this sucks...sorry this happened. Mine has taken a strike or two but no cracking. I personally would use Rivian over Safelite even if it's slightly more expensive. I don't want to be the test case for them doing camera calibration.

Living in Colorado I've had 5 or 6 chip repairs... This last one caused it to have a long crack!

So not sure if it's a Colorado thing driving through the mountains or if these windshields are weak, but every time I hear a rock hit my windshield, about 50% of the time it creates a chip!

Just had Rivian do a replacement 2 weeks ago. Neither Safelite nor any of the local shops were able to get a Rivian Windshield. Hope you have better luck. Rivian cost $1,800 including recalibration.

(Fwiw, in my experience Safelite sucks especially when using insurance and you are better off with any local shop and paying out of pocket.)

Safelite fixed my rock chip, but it was still kinda visible. But a few days later a couple rocks caused several more cracks including one near the cameras. The Rivian service manager said the the passenger side camera (in the center) is a long distance camera that is not even being used by the system as they have not implemented that one yet! Rivian estimate for replacement was about $1750. and I was told the Safelite also uses Rivian OEM glass.

Just got my windshield replaced by Safelite w aftermarket glass yesterday. Given the quality (or lack thereof) of Rivian glass, I’m cautiously optimistic. Safelite in San Diego is not yet certified for recalibration. The shop manager told me his ‘master technician’ is about to be trained by Rivian and they will be able to calibrate Rivians at the time of replacement come NLT mid-June.

As for my calibration, my Rivian SC appt is September 2nd (!), but the Safelite manager told me to check back with him next month. All-in-all a painless experience from the Safelite side.

Peace!

Similar experience. Little hit under cowling behind windshield wiper. Really think guy at car wash was heavy with the brush drop, prewashing for an automatic touchless. Anyway - after talking to both Glass America and Safelight, neither were certified for the 're-calibration' for the OEM or aftermarket glass. Windshield swap was at Denver Service Center. The Service Manger said the toys (aka the calibration instruments) would take up two parking spaces and 3 hours. And $1700 later, I have adjusted my insurance for $0.00 deductible for comprehensive (glass coverage). Never new about it for the below story.

About the Colorado thing - YES, 30 years driving in the Chicago area and cross country east and south - NEVER a stone/rock hit to break glass. The last Grand Cherokee was exactly 60 days old with 3000 miles when the first rock hit while running east on I70 up to the Johnson & Eisenhower tunnels. Then three more before trading it for the Rivian only 14 months old. And even then there was a crack when I dropped off for trade-in. Ralph my insurance guy says Colorado and Arizona are worst for windshields.

Now a new question.

With the new glass, do I get Ceramic coating applied?
What of using Rain-X on Rivian's? I used it religiously on my Grand Cherokee's (5 of various vintage) and it was great.
Does anyone have opinion/advise?

So it was too good to be true. I got a cancelation today from Safelite saying they are not authorized to calibrate and they can't get OEM glass. Rivian won't calibrate none OEM glass according to Safelite. So I have no choice but to wait for the Rivian appt. Hopefully something opens up soon.

my local Safelite looks sketchy, not OEM glass so I cancelled my appointment with them and went with a certified Rivian Collision Repair Center for a quicker resolution, still waiting to schedule an appt as my Rivian service appt is in July, while my cracked windshield has gotten significantly worse over time.

once i get new glass installed. i might just go and pay for the windshield version of ppf. pricey... but probably worth it just the wait to get new glass alone.

Just added windshield replacement to my open service center ticket. I've had two small chips on this windshield, both repaired pretty easily with the Rain-x windshield repair kit purchased from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IPS4APU/ ). This one's a bit bigger, though, and the lateral ray from the break actually stopped at one of my previous self-repair locations, so I could see this one splitting even further. I'm still going to try a self-repair tonight, but it is probably time for a replacement.

Maybe Rivian is making tougher windshield glass as part of the factory retooling!:rock:

This is my third windshield in this R1S in right at a year, the replacement will be #4. The first two replacements were from bad seals - the first from the factory and the second from the replacement of the first.

I like to tint the inside of the windshield for heat here in the florida sun - I've had great results tinting with 70% tint, which looks almost clear. Many here tint with 50%. Both of those are technically illegal in Florida.

What I would really like to see is some great PPF or ceramic coating for the exterior of the windshield. A friend of mine with a Fisker (insert sob story here) is going with Exoshield since he may never be able to get a replacement windshield. I'm going to look into this too https://www.getexoshield.com/products/windshield-protection-film-gt3

Sorry to OP for thread hijack, just sharing my thoughts after being attacked by a rock about an hour ago!

FWIW I was at Safelite this morning to have a small crack repaired before it gets worse, and I asked the Tech if he knew when they might be able to both replace glass and recalibrate the safety system on Rivians. He claims that as of about a month ago they were able to do that now.

I have no idea if he knows what he’s talking about or not, but I didn’t get the impression he was just making that up. He brought up how it took years for Tesla to allow them to do it.

Just passing along what I heard…
