Atomic for the win. If efficiency, very good handling and great comfort are what you want. I'm very happy with Pirelli AS Plus 3 20 275/60. Look way better and cheaper than 21s and same to better efficiency.

I have a set of Stock 22s which I find handle amazingly but has a really really harsh ride in my opinion.
I have a set of Dodge Ram 20's with a old set of K02s which have a softer ride but are amazingly loud

I kind of want to stick with 1 set of wheels so i am leaning towards 20's

I know we have a LOT of tire/wheel threads but maybe this will help someone (once an answer is figured out) on creating the best tire combo in terms of the following options in order of importance.

1. Traction/Safety/Handling (all in the same category because I think they are all inked together
2. Comfort
3. Efficiency (cant be worse than 22's), maybe changing rotational mass from 83lbs to something like 68lbs (wheel tire combo)
4. Off-Road worthiness (I have done the two trails in my area, I know one needs 20s but proper, the others can go with 22's) so its not important for me really

So I am thinking an Atomic Wheel (or something similar like Kaos 20s or a black rhino voltaic) but the real question is picking the tire. for a side I am thinking 275/60/20 to offer better handling but wish 55 was an option as its more sidewall that the stock 22 for comfort but not so much it affects handling.

So doing some research from a spec perspective I found this

Let me know if I am wrong or just being too nitpicky lol. Also would love input.
I have the 275/60/20 setup and like it. I have some cheap ass mud tires that work well, but won’t balance out perfectly. I am going to try some Hankooks next.

I agree with Schroederhc, The new Michelin Defender LTX Platinum is THE tire to get. Sure they're heavy, but the ride quality, comfort and lack of noise makes these the best tire in my mind.
Sure they're expensive, but then a 70,000 mile warranty means you won't have to replace them very often. I now have 4000 miles on mine, and I am over the moon with these.

That's a strong statement, what other tires have you actually compared to? The Continental Terrain Contact AT or HT are also great tires with great ride, handling, traction, and noise characteristics (especially compared to the OE Pirellis) and at a fraction of the price and weight of the Platinums. I haven't experienced the Platinums myself as they aren't available in a 22" fitment, unlike the Contis. But I think it's perhaps a bit of an oversell to call the Platinums "THE" tire to have, especially given the mixed reports regarding traction. For those wanting to stick with Michelins, I would recommend the new Defender LTX M/S 2 over the Platinums - but that's based on the reviews of others as I have no first hand experience with either.

I have the 275/65R20 Michelin LTX Platinums on Atomic AW09s. I came from the 21” wheels.

They’re ok. The weight is definitely noticeable. My suspension is way nosier, like when driving <30 in my neighborhood or in a parking lot. I don’t notice at speed though. Acceleration “feels” slower - like everything just takes a bit longer to get moving.

I wanted the AT sidewall look without the efficiency penalty which is why I chose the Platinums. Were I to do it again, I’m not sure which tire I’d choose but it would definitely be a 116 rated tire rather than a LT E load rated one like the Platinum.

So those tires weigh 59lbs and the AW09 weighs 32lbs which is 91lbs compared to the stock 21s which is 85lbs

you added 6lbs of rotational mass per corner which explains your results.

My two cents: the 21s are a great set up except for the early wear challenge and the price to replace. Ride is great balance of quiet comfort and good handling. That being said, I changed mine out at just over 15,000 miles with 5/32 - 6/32 left. I was going to powder coat the 21s in satin black but decided to buy new wheels and cheaper tires and get a new look.

So, I purchased the Martian Wheels. Great price on sale but only in bronze so I had them powder coated in satin black and then ceramic. Not for everyone but I love the look. Installed the Michelin Defender LTX MS/2 in 275/60/20 to match the 21 diameter for no change in calibration.

I have over 1,000 miles on them and this is my short report:

- softer than the Pirelli so very comfortable quiet ride
- sidewall doesn't seem as strong as they definitely roll a bit more in the corners and don't feel as solid. I'm not sure if it's a function of the 60 sidewall or the lighter weight or what.
- no change in calibration and efficiency seems the same as 21s
- way too early to tell on treadwear but hoping they last longer

I ride in All-purpose soft so I like a a softer ride and don't mind the cornering but I'm not sure @kanundrum will like them as they're not as confident and sporty. Personally, I think you'd think the OEM 21s are the best all around combination of handling and feel and efficiency.

I just posted my used wheels for sale, @240vPlug or @kanundrum , if you want to have powder coated in dark. Can mount with OEM or maybe the Michelins will be less expensive and last longer when they came out. Would choose which tire depending on priority of solid handling, price, or potential treadwear.

@kanundrum, I'll be in NoVa and Bethesda this Thursday if you wanted to try to meet up in the evening to check out my set up and feel the handling. DM me if you're interested.

Pictures were right after install so tires have that weird finish on them. Will get better photos soon and maybe do my own full write up.

So far the Geolandar CV 4S (275/60R20) have been great.
The R1S handles so much better than the 20” OEM Pirelli’s that it’s like driving a whole new car. The floaty boat-like steering is gone and you can really feel the improved steering response. I think it’s the perfect all weather tire for anyone looking for one tire setup. I’m not expecting it to have amazing tread wear since it’s three-peak and tread seems fairly soft. I don’t think it’s as efficient as the Grabber HTS60 or Defender M/S2…but pretty close.

I would say there are only about 4 tires that will be best for the R1:

General Grabber HTS60 is perfect for daily driving, tread wear is likely not fantastic and speed rating is lower.

Michelin Defender M/S2 is going to be a little better for tread wear, the low RR/high UTQG means that it’s going to sacrifice stopping and cornering performance, which may be fine for some.

Geolandar CV4S is slightly less efficient but will out perform in wet/snow and dry conditions.

Nitto Nomad AT is a good hybrid on/off option, efficiency likely comparable to the 20” OEM.

Do you have an efficiency report yet? I was looking for "One tire to rule them all", 3PMSF HT style with decent efficiency, or at least better than stock 20s, so I can run one tire all year.

Yes, it’s somewhere around 5-10% more efficient than OEM 20”, significantly improved ride/handling. Don’t have wet/snow performance but imagine it’s very good. Looks wise it’s better than Grabber/Defender/AS+3…for my personal use, would like it to be slightly more highway tuned, it’s pretty sticky, but there will be many people that will appreciate the performance aspects of the tire.

if you want the lightest combo, then go with Atomic wheels and General grabber HTS60 275/60/20. I'm currently run this set up and it is about 5% better efficiency than my original 21". Ride feels very similar to original 21" as well, and you can't beat the price for the tires either.

Any specs you need. Regarding weight, I think for 20x8.5, we can achieve less than 25 lbs, while keeping the same 1170 kg payload. The exact weight we will know after we design the 3D model of these for Rivians.
We will do it in the next few days and I'll share the outcome.
Did the AWZZ specs make it? Curious if you were able to break into ~25 lbs for it or not...?

Your efficiency should be better. That’s a fact.

Smaller wheels with same size tire are more efficient. I have R1S oem 20 brights on 275/60/20 Pirelli AS 3 and they’re 7% more efficient than my R1T with 21’s. The Martian wheels are more aerodynamic and lighter than Rivian 20 brights so what you have is the best setup for efficiency.
