Got a quick question on plugging in and waiting for off peak hours to start.

For my first couple months of ownership, I had a level 2 charger and I simply plugged in and it would charge to completion, usually 70%. I never used the Rivian app schedule because there was no real reason to.

However, I recently signed up (FPL in Florida) for their home charging program. $31 for unlimited off peak charging and they included a wallbox charger and install of it. I figure this will save me about $70 a month based on my usage. Look into it if you live in Florida. FPL EVolution.

Anyhow, since I got the wallbox charger, I plug it in when I park, say around 5PM and in theory the FPL/wallbox app will only allow juice to flow beginning at 10PM. Note that I have not tried to use the Rivian app schedule function in conjunction.

The FPL/wallbox app communicates with the wallbox charger and only starts flowing during off-peak. Sometimes this has worked perfectly and the juice starts flowing at 10:00pm. And other times the Rivian notes an error and asks me to replug in. Sometimes, it will begin charging at 10 seemingly ignoring the error and other times the error will not allow charging. This cost me a few days ago when I went to sleep and the truck errored out and didnt charge at all and I only realized in the morning (and had to go on a 250 mile trip).

Has anyone else experienced this?

I imagine I might be able to eliminate the error by scheduling the Rivian App for 10:00 pm as well. Thereby letting the truck know not to expect juice until 10pm. I don't love this answer given how simple the Rivian app scheduler is. You can only establish a beginning and end and you can't have multiple different time periods.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm using an Emporia 48A hardwired charger and the super off-peak scheduling in the Emporia app has worked perfectly for me since I got it two years ago. Since I began using it with the Rivian, it has shown a charging error in the Rivian app (with a red-lit charging port) a little while after plugging in, but it always starts charging right when it's supposed to- for us that's 11 PM, and it hasn't missed a beat. I do not currently use the Rivian's built-in charging schedule.

Tweaking the charging schedule in the Emporia app has been flawless and honestly pretty cool to experiment with. I am currently pushing the start time out later in night during the winter for daily charging since that will generate heat in the battery closer to my normal departure time, versus it completing earlier in the night and cold soaking in the early morning hours. When Rivian can enable scheduled departure charging in their software via an OTA, I'll likely turn the Emporia scheduling off and let the vehicle handle it, assuming it works well.

Thanks for response. I actually had an emporia charger before this change. I do like that app better but like the wallbox form factor a little better. It also seems to get closer to full hardwire output potential and the cord is just easier to wrap on the hook.

Anyhow, yes it has really worked everytime exactly as you said yours works.....except for the one time I was really relying on it. Given I was going to 100% I wanted to get cute and start it at 2AM so that it was warm and not sitting at 100% for longer than needed. Of course that is the one time it didn't do what it was supposed to. Murphys law I guess.

Is human error possible if it's only failed to start on time when you tweaked it for that 100% charge? Maybe like the classic am/pm mixup or didn't hit "save" when you thought you did etc

Good point. I did overlook an important fact in my explanation. In order to set it for 2AM I did actually use the Rivian scheduler to prevent the FPL app from sending juice beginning at 10PM.

I tested this at 10:30 and sure enough it worked and started to charge at 10:30. I should have let it continue but instead I reset it for 2AM. I am extremely confident it was 2AM but I do allow for humans doing dumb things. Still given the thinking I put into this ill fated plan, I am very confident I set the Rivian scheduler for 2AM. I did awake at 6AM to an error in the app and through the FPL app I could tell that the "session" (which never delivered juice) did infact end around 2AM.

Anyhow, it's a little academic given I'll just let it charge in the future.

I'm on the same program and have the same issue occasionally. Luckily, I can get to work and back if it doesn't charge properly.

Rivian has been absolutely worthless and no help here. Enel X said they have had other Rivian owners report this and asked me to get Rivian to reach out to them but Rivian refuses to help.

My neighbor with a BMW has no problems on the same program.

Used to have the issue of the vehicle not picking up the change with my wallbox, but Rivian fixed it for me several software versions ago. I'd also double check your schedule. I had to explicitly add Monday morning in.

When I charge at home I have the time schedule set up to start at midnight to 9am everyday. I will plug in when I get home sometimes at 7pm and it won't start charging until midnight.

I have a Lectron 32a - 240v , 14-50 charger that we use for both the Rivian R1T and the Toyota Rav4 Prime. Works like a charm. It doesn't have an app which is ok because I can shut off the charging through the app.
