Same issue here (dual / max / 2023 model year). The sound was normal for the first 1,000 miles, and then this milling sound showed up ever since (kids said it sounds like a space ship coming down the road). The tech heard it immediately on a test drive and said it's the first time he's heard it on a Rivian. He came from Tesla and had heard that noise there, so he was familiar with it in that regard.

They are replacing the FDU, so hopefully we're all quiet again when I get it returned.
What service center said they would replace the FDU? El Segundo told me that it was a known issue!

Atlanta. Attaching video of the sound I had on my truck. It's hard to tell with these videos if it's the same or not, but they immediately said that needs to be replaced.

Confirming same abnormal vibration/grinding noise between 20-30 on regen, especially at exactly 23mph. Mine is a Gen 1 Dual Motor vehicle and has done this since delivery. Interestingly, it does not make this noise initially when motor temp is below 100F; does it all the time once after vehicle is going for a few minutes. Had to drive it with Service rep today to get them to immediately notice noise is unusual after informing them about it prior. Will report if they tell me this issue has reported "fix" yet as it is a mystery as to what is causing it.
SLC service said they have received complaints about the issue, have looked into "fix" but no official documentation on it. Current guidance appears to be FDU replacement and will hopefully follow through with that on my car. Id recommend escalating if you want it fixed now. If not, I would expect something to eventually be put into documentation like "fix is X if customer complains". I personally think whatever is making the noise is not harming the drive unit, but its obviously an abnormal noise and is unacceptably annoying if driving 20-30mph.
These things take time to receive official fixes. I think every Rivian Gen 1 has the "chirping suspension" and its been posted about for almost 2 years, but official "fix" was just implemented 3 weeks ago.

I just picked up a 2024 R1T with less than 60 miles on it and it is also making this noise. Booked an appt with the service center. I am curious how this doesn't come up in quality checks if it is a "known issue".

Exact same sound I have on my 4xxxx R1S DM. Blauvert SC is doing drive unit swap out at the moment.

*UPDATE*

Picked up the repaired truck this weekend with a new Enduro FDU installed and the sound is gone. Hoping others have the same luck in getting this fixed.!

Same noise here, I'm at almost 2K miles (Vin 31xxxx) on a DM Standard +. The noise is specially audible on deceleration. I will bring this up during the 7500K service, sounds like its a "known issue"......lol.

Took mine into service center for the noise. It is confirmed and they have ordered a new drive unit to replace the existing one. (all at around 100 miles on the odometer)
Frustrated that it had an issue, but very happy with the service experience so far.

Just got the R1T back from service and the whine is gone!! Here is what they did:

Duplicated the customer concern with the customer. Compared the noise to another known
good dual motor performance R1T with 21" wheels and found that the comparison vehicle does
not make the same level of drive unit whirring noise and is noticeably quieter. Recommend
inspection of the sound deadening material on the front drive unit (FDU) and if no abnormalities
are present, escalate for confirmation of FDU replacement. Found that the noise isolation
material around the drive unit shows no signs of trauma or abnormalities. Isolated the whirring
noise to the front drive unit using chassis ears. Confirmed with on-site diagnostic specialist that
FDU replacement is the recommended path forward. Replaced the front drive unit following the
service manual repair guidelines and confi
rmed proper operation after the repair.
Would you mind sharing what your R1 sounds like now that the FDU has been replaced? It would be a good comparison to what it sounded like before.

I am noticing my 2024 R1S Dual Performance Max, which I picked up in Dec '03 making a similar sound and want to compare to your fixed rig. Thanks!

Just checking in as a Performance Dual Motor owner to say that does not sound normal. Sounds like yours has a vibration element to its sound when decelerating that I do not hear in mine.

It does sound kinda badass, though.

The sound from the drive unit is nearly silent. I would estimate the reduction in whine level is greater than 20db. Other noises, such as HVAC fan, ac compressor, suspension air compressor, suspension rattles, tire noise and wind noise above 45 mph are louder. I believe that you will be totally satisfied with the motor noise level once the FDU is replaced.

Update: FDU replaced and abnormal sound is still there. Sound is slightly different but still a vibration noise not present on other EVs and sounds like shit. Rivian clearly has a production variance issue with their Enduro drive units (Gen1 at least). Vehicle bought back by Rivian after 20+ issues at delivery and 60+ days in service in first 90 days. Rivian quality is complete shit IMO (both from factory and from service visits) and I would highly recommend anyone owning or buying a Rivian, Gen1 at least, get rid of it asap because as soon as it goes out of warranty youll be racking up thousands of $ in service bills and the vehicle will quickly be a hunk of junk.

Unfortunately, this is what a service guy at dallas center told me. The sounds of the Enduro is just "loud and weird" compared to the Bosch motors. He said it is within normal and if it is getting progressively worse over time, then they may do something about it. He also told me that replace the FDU may not elimiate the problem.

For now, I will just ignore it and turn on the musics. It begins to bother me less and less everyday.

Update: el Segundo service center is finally replacing the front drive unit. Hope to get the car back in a week. Will let you all know if it fixed it.
