Rivian's paint thickness averages around 3.9 mils, which is considered normal for most vehicles. This thickness is comparable to other automakers like Tesla and Honda, which typically range from 3.5 to 4.0 mils.

I’m leasing a Tesla Model 3 and I have to say I think the paint is very thin. I got some rock chips within the first few months and you could see silver marks under the white paint. I need to get some touchup paint.

The way I first read this, it seemed contradictory. But I suppose it isn't if you meant to imply that "normal" thickness is too thin?

I would agree that Tesla paint seems thin/fragile.

These days, most paints are thinner/more fragile. Combo of changing chemistry for environmental goals, weight and cost reduction. I know, seems silly to say "weight" but it does get factored. Primarily, it's been changes to the chemistry behind the paint mix and the top coats.

Thanks Jose! Yeap, I am sold! Esker Silver it is for me. I honestly believe there will not be many Esker Silver Performance R2's on the road as I believe most are going with the paint upgrades in the Performance Trim. I suspect orders for have been low as it is still an 8-12 week lead time for the color, meaning they aren't running it often based on the low initial demand. Could change once premium and standard hit the market.

Yeah, if Tesla’s paint is considered “normal” then it’s on the lower end (3.5 mils).

I’ve heard that automakers are using thinner poorer quality windshield glass as well, which is leading to more scratches and breakages. I’ve even seen tint places offering a PPF-like product for your windshield! I guess this goes along with tempered glass screen protectors for your phone, etc.

Why don’t they just put that shit on there in the first place? Because then they can’t market it and sell it to you as a separate product.

It would probably look pretty cool, if you like more of a satin finish. I personally want the metallic flake to show, but clear PPF on the front wouldn’t be a bad idea.

That’s true, but you’ll still have the kickass Compass Yellow brake calipers. What wheels are you going to get?

Definately going 21's. Would love to see them push out darks by the time I order in the Spring. AI helped with this image I am sharing...looks siiiick!

I think AI made the wheels in the front a little too big. Big wheels look cool. Designers especially like them, but I’ve heard they’re not quite as comfortable as something with larger sidewalls, like the 20” wheels.

I have test driven R2 with both 21” & 20” on the same roads with same ride feel setting and felt no difference in hitting bumps and such. 21” did feel more planted especially when turning

I finally got to demo drive the R2. They had a Catalina Cove and a Glacier White outside and a Half Moon Grey inside at the Fishers, Indiana Rivian Space.

If everything goes well I’ll be getting the R2 Standard Long-Range in Esker Silver. I put my photographic skills to the test and took a closeup of the sample and another showing how the light reflects off of the body curves. Of course it was inside and I forgot to ask the attendant if I could take it outside in the sun, but still cool nonetheless. I really tried to capture the metallic flake. Enjoy!

I was told 8-12 weeks for my order, guess what arrived today (4 weeks)??!!!

I had ordered in Esker Silver, only saw a few pics before ordering. It looks AWESOME in person, I think you’re going to love!
