Got an update on fast charging issue. Trenton Service Center “has verified“ that it won’t fast charge and is ordering a new charging port. Hopefully that will address the problem…

So, after 2+ weeks in the Trenton SC, they called to say they were dropping my R1S off. They reportedly replaced the vehicle charging port and said it now fast charging successfully. They returned it last Wed. and I immediately took it to the local Tesla Supercharger station. (The only fast charger near me) Using my brand spanking new Rivian NACS adapter, I attempted to charge….nope. Tried twice, plug and play and using the Tesla app. Nope. The following day, drove to a new Kempower 50kw CCS charger, just in case I had a faulty NACS adapter. Still nothing. Filed another service ticket and now awaiting a callback. <sigh>

Update…contacted Rivian again, after 2 weeks of silence on their part, about the charging issue. They sent the head tech from the Trenton SC all the way up here to verify that I’m not an idiot. He tried fast charging as well and acknowledged that it doesn‘t. (Insert the comment of your choice) Got a text at 5:50 AM this morning that a truck was on its way to haul my poor vehicle back to Trenton for a third crack at fixing it. They did agree to preorder a CGM in the event they can’t find another reason for not fast charging.

I’d really like this to be over…

Maybe start the lemon process? Not being able to drive the car a decent distance has to be the basis for a lemon case.

I don’t want to give the vehicle back. I just want it to fast charge! Fingers crossed they get it right this time. My money is on a new CGM…

I hope you get your issue fix ASAP.

I was (maybe I am?) in similar situation. My last long trip was nightmare to fast charge the truck. the EA stall wouldn't charge. ChargePoint only for few minutes. The FPL (Florida public chargers) worked only couple times (solid though) after maybe 40 tries. I reset the car before and after the initial try on each stall. I took pics and videos of the dashboard (my wife helped). Mine was saying that "DC Fast Charging is currently unavailable. Wait for the plug to cool down". Few times it will say, disconnect and connect again the plug. I opened a service ticket and they said they would send a mobile tech but one day before they called and said they analyzed the reset logs and they were pretty sure it was the charging port harness. Next available slot for service was 2 months later but they managed to get my car the next day (Miami Service Center). After 3 weeks of frustrating communications with them, they replaced the harness and "all was good". Their diagnose:

Concern:
- The customer states that on 08/21/24 at 02:42:07 PM EST, that he is getting notification that DC Fast charging is disabled.
Cause:
- Replaced charge port harness due to CP negative pin over-temp detected
Correction/Remedy:
- Charge Port and Harness Assembly (Remove and Replace)
- Charge Port General Diagnostic

I'm overseas for work and my wife received the truck. She doesn't want to drive the car :p to check the fast charging. Right now I wonder if they really fix the problem. I checked the charging sessions but there are only 2: one short that looked it was L2 and another long one, which it was definitely a L2. Finger crossed

WOW! Sorry to hear about your fast charging issue, and definitely not impressed by the unacceptably long time it's taken for Rivian to get it fixed - whenever they finally do!

We just took delivery of our Gen 2 R1T two weeks ago and are loving it so far. We too are avid cyclists, and we don't expect to use fast charging unless on road trips, so we commiserate but also appreciate reading about your experience, I will be testing fast charging on our R1T very soon!

I hope your CGM replacement fixes it, hard to believe they didn't correctly diagnose this at the first appointment... Makes me wonder how capable the service people are!!

I had a similar issue on EVgo fast charger in LA area this morning. It refused to charge at 350kW DC. I have used that 350kW DC before In the same location. I even moved to another 350kW and it failed Today. when I moved to 100kW DC, it did not have a problem. Does it need some preconditioning before I plug into 350kW? How did it work last month? ??

So, finally some good news. They had my R1S for a day and called me, saying it was fixed. After everything prior, I was dubious. Said I wanted to talk to the head tech. He explain that they replaced the CGM and it fast charged without a hitch. I reviewed the charging history and saw they pulled an average of 100kw for over an hour and charged the vehicle near full. Still waiting on a tow truck to flatbed it back to me, but I’m optimistic…

Did it refuse to charge at all, or did it just not make it to a high rate like you were expecting? You should not need to precondition to charge at any rate. If you don't precondition, it will just take a a little longer to charge.

I just read through this thread and have to say, I admire your patience @BradSholl. I've yet to take my seven-month old R1T on a trip long enough to require public charging, but your saga highlights the need to ensure that your Rivian can handle DCFC before setting out on a road trip.

Glad to see it looks like the problem is now fixed; please update us though.

It would never DC charge. Refused to initiate charge regardless of charging station, credit card vs app, preconditioning or external temperature. Always errored out. Level 1 and 2 (AC) charged just fine.

Ok, the vehicle was flatbedded home yesterday. Took it immediately to the local Wawa for a test charge at the Tesla SC there. I plugged in the NACS adapter and selected the charger with the Tesla app. It said “failed to charge” or something like that but I was getting the green light around the charge port so I checked the Rivian app and it reported charging at roughly 45KwH for 4 minutes (it was already at 83% SOC). I’ll check at other chargers when I get to one, but looks like the CGM change fixed it. Whew…
