First road trip - range concern / question

Nice truck! I just did my first road trip. I agree with what others have said-speed, pre-conditioning and the cold all have impact. The local highway speed limits are 75-85 so it's hard to go 65-70 on these, unless you want to get run over (jk). I just drive like I would normally. Cheers.

Yeap. In texas, speed limit is 75. Better be driving on the right hand lane or else you gonna get passed by 18 wheelers semi.

In the past year, we have had 3 more RAN's open along major arteries in the mid-Atlantic. The more all of us travel, the better the experience shall be.

I think the think most new EV buyers don't appreciate is that the "range" of any EV is more akin the the average fuel economy rating on an ICE car than an actual expectation of range. It's a long-term average that makes different cars comparable. But experience on any given trip can be wildly different. I kinda wish they came up with a better metric for EV comparability, but it's what we have.

This is one of those things I knew intuitively going into EV ownership, but I didn't fully appreciate until I had a few trips under my belt.

The key thing is to trust your nav and/or trip planners like ABRP. They're pretty good about giving accurate, but slightly conservative estimates of how much energy the battery pack will have on arrival. The range guestimate itself (on the front screen, not nav) is not a great guide.

Well said! The R1S replaced a car that was getting 10-12 mpg so anything is better for me.

I’m definitely learning about what the range on the front screen says and then what arrival range on GPS says. I will say it’s frustrating to see it vary so wildly.

268 shown on screen. 104 mile to destination. 88 arrival miles. That’s a BIG difference. Also why I use GPS so much now.

The miles remaining is just rated range for driving 55 in 70° temps on flat ground. Pretty worthless. The GPS is the key. It is looking at the actual speed limits, temperature, elevation changes, and winds.

My only complaint is the nav shows arrival state of charge in those same bogus miles rather than giving me a percent full. Still, if the little battery is showing green I know I’ll have at least 17% on arrival. It is actually pretty good at estimating arrival state of charge, even when I’m towing.

I managed to beat the range on the remaining several times during my cross country trip in my quad in conserve on 22's. I was doing 73 though with cruise on.

We just did a 2k road trip from NW Arkansas to Colorado (Leadville) and back. We noticed you can significantly improve your range by dropping the ride height to Lowest, as long as the roads aren't too bumpy. You might try that. (We have R1S Quad LE)

Air, wind, elevation gain/loss, speed will greatly affect your range. Sometimes good and sometimes surprisingly.

the miles to empty on the driver screen is a guess-o-meter and doesn’t take into account any of the above.

I’ve found that entering a destination into the nav is the best way to estimate range at your next stop. When I initially start a trip it will say one number and then usually end pretty close to that number at my programmed destination.

I lose about 1/2% of range for every 1 degree below 70F. So about a 35% loss at 0F.

Just returned to SoCal on a trip to New England and back. Took the Tesla (free charging) and found something interesting about cold weather range. Temps ranged between -8 to upper 30s, I found even in single digit temps the first leg of the day range was quite a bit less but after that first charge the subsequent legs that day between charges the consumption was pretty close to my normal consumption.

That kind of maps to my maiden R1S trip last January where I got 2.2 miles per kWh on a 5100 mile trip.

Does anyone else see this on long trips in the cold? For reference this trip in the Model S was 6500 miles averaging 310 Wh/mile (3.2 miles per kWh).
