Hi Everyone,

Taking my R1T on its first real road trip tomorrow and will need to do at least 1 stop to charge. ABRP suggests I hit a Tesla charging station on my route, what should I be prepared for to use this charging station? I have an adapter but is there any apps or anything I should download before hand or is it as simple as plug, charge and pay?

thank you!

As long as you have a credit card linked to your Rivian account it is just plug and charge at any compatible Tesla supercharger. Basically the same experience you have with RAN assuming you have stopped at one of them before.

Syncs with your Rivian account, you don’t have to do anything. Precondition the battery or point to the charger as your designation in the nav. Should be 45 min at max Depending how empty you are. Also if there are several Tesla chargers locations you compare prices some do differ.

I've not stopped at a RAN before, but will make sure my credit card is linked on my Rivian account. It should already be, but I'll double check. Thank you!

So, as long as the charger is set as my destination the battery will precondition itself on it's own? Nothing I need to do special?

as far as the pricing, do you mean if there are 5 stalls at 1 stop, those 5 stalls might have different prices or like if there are 5 different charging stations in a 5 mile radius, check the prices on those 5 different stations?

I'll strongly suggest that you head out to a nearby Tesla charger today, connect, and add $2 worth of juice to your ride so that you feel comfortable with the process for when you really need it. You don't want to have problems or questions when you have to charge. Unless you find a non-Tesla at a Tesla SC site there won't be anyone there who can help you.

Also - depending on where you're going, you may not have to use a Tesla charger (with the adapter). There are lots of other chargers that will plug in directly.

That is a good idea actually. Thanks!

Question, is there a way to send the route from ABRP to my Rivian?

Yes - within the ABRP app you can link to your Rivian account and that will allow you to send routes directly to the Rivian.

Since you've never used a Tesla charger before ...

The biggest mistake is to assume, without checking, that the Tesla charger is open to Rivians. If you have your filters set correctly in ABRP and the Rivian app, then you will only see the ones that can be used. But if you don't have your filters set correctly, you might be routed to one of the 30% of Tesla chargers that CANNOT be used. You don't want to be in that situation.

So:
1) Double check with the Rivian app, ABRP, and even the Tesla website https://www.tesla.com/findus , to make sure that the charger you intend to stop at will work with Rivians. All these sources of information should say the same thing if you've chosen the correct filters.
2) Have a backup plan in mind just in case the charger doesn't work (regardless of charger brand). Is there another close stop where you can get a charge? If not, then plan on charging someplace else that *does* have a backup.
3) It doesn't hurt to have the Tesla app set up with a credit card as backup and as a way to confirm that the Tesla station is open to Rivians. I have the apps for 15 networks set up (and tested) - some are redundant because they work for multiple networks, but when I need to charge in the middle of nowhere I like to have alternatives that I know will work.

Extremely helpful and detailed, thank you!

Get Plugshare on your phone too. It's like the Yelp of EV charging. You can research ahead of time this way.

Also, park centered with the station. You may need to ignore the painted lines but some Tesla stations are striped with the dispenser in the middle. Try to find a station on the end of a row. These tips help to not block a second dispenser.
