Regarding the included tire sealant.... see post #23 above where the poster did try the sealant but the whole was too large so the sealant failed.
Tire sealant is not a good solution, I'm not sure why so many manufacturers include it instead of a tire repair kit with gummy worms. I would carry a spare before I would rely on a can of tire sealant!

They include it because it's significantly easier to "get right" for most drivers. It's much easier for people to understand the process. Connect a container to the valve, empty the container, inflate tire, move along. It's also less physically demanding -- not from a strength perspective but from a technique and dexterity perspective.

Make sure the leaking area is at the lowest point when reinflating so that the goop flows into the leak easily.

Yes, that's right. I did miss that step. Easier to put the leak at the bottom than to make sure the leaking area is accessible for me to plug.

You can always plug first and if it is still leaking a little, air back down, add goop, air back up with plug on ground.

Rivian R1S 2023
Went out to the garage Sun am and found R1S with right front tire flat. Really flat.
Since the compressed spare was removed from my build and is not yet available in the gear shop, I have no spare.
I called roadside assistance and they said to have it Towed to a Discount Tire, and they could fix it or replace it.
They could arrange towing for $50 and $.35 per mile…

Discount Tire closed on Sunday.
Reinflated tire with garage compressor and drove it to Discount Tire on Monday. They do not have jack pucks for it, so they can’t help until they or I get Jack pucks.
So- ordered some.
Will take 2-3 days for them to arrive.

Very annoying- but what if I was out on the road somewhere?

When I learned to drive my father said never leave home without a good spare, a jack and a lug wrench.
Technically, I didn’t leave home, but…
Ugh!
I received my compact spare tire and sold it right away. Bought the plugs and a couple of quick repair kits since that compact tire looked like a waste of extra weight and space. TBH I've had one flat tire in 23 years (knocking on wood now)

All Jeeps have full size spares as far as I know. I had 2 Grand Jeep Cherokees over a 30 year period and the full size spare was buried in the aft bottom of the vehicle but inside.
Dang! It would be more work just to get the spare and jack out of the vehicle (from its buried location) than it would be to just plug the tire that was already mounted to the wheel on the axle.

An “Adventure” vehicle should have a full size spare available besides taking up the sleeping quarters when camping IMO. Hopefully , they dont make the same mistake with the R2.
That's not a very "adventurous" attitude! I would rather plan on making an emergency puncture repair if it were needed. I will guarantee you that the Rivian R2 will not come with a spare because Rivian knows it's a wasteful and outdated way of dealing with a potential flat.

Most flat tires due to sidewall damage amongst this kind of usage are the direct result of not understanding the operational parameters of the tires being used. Tires designed for high speeds are generally not designed to be aired down as far as "conventional wisdom" suggests. If people understood their All-Terrain tires acceptable pressure ranges better, the number of tires experiencing sidewall damage would drop dramatically.

like it or not a lot of vehicles don’t include a spare these days.
Most vehicles that come with a factory tow hitch or have a tow package still come with a full size spare tire. It's still pretty standard in the automotive industry since towing without a full size spare doesn't make much sense.

As I understand it, if you get a cut in the sidewall, there is no plug repair that is going to occur and that is the dominant tire issue off road where sharp rocks pinch or slice the side of the tire. It just occurred on my first off road trip with the 6 month new R1S. Fortunately, it did not penetrate the nylon. ,

. Rivian could have done this by getting rid of the 3rd row of seats I will never use.
I might have been interested in an R1S if Rivian had offered a version without the third row, allowing a full size spare and more storage.

This reminds me to get a spray bottle, fill it with soapy water, and put it in the truck. Trying to plug a tire at night can be difficult.
