Maybe only free lifetime data for Launch Edition owners... ?
If they do this, I would like to see free lifetime data for early preorders, LE or not. Not everyone who supported Rivian in the early days wanted an LE. They have our preorder dates.

Thanks for the clarity on this point. Was totally under the impression that it was linked to some satellite service other than typical networks like a sat phone would do. Good to know that i shouldn't rely on it if stuck somewhere off the grid!
I think it will be my grandchildren who are able to enjoy a satellite-serviced connection from their R12V

Just read in one of the facebook group that free data plan is ending in 3 months. Haven’t received any email from Rivian. Anyone has more information about this?
I really hope they offer hotspot plan. My kids are now spoiled with free hotspot.

I would not even be interested in their data if Android Auto was available. Keep it free until they accommodate the two standards, Android and Apple, which both work considerably better than Alexa for every function I have used.

Anybody know if there is a spot to insert a sim to add your own data plan?

So, how will updates be received if you decline the mobile data plan? Wifi at home only? Or maybe it will still have basic connectivity to get updates only.

No kidding? I never owned a Tesla and didn’t realize it was so cheap! The legacy manufacturers typically charge as little as $15 per month but up to $25 depending on whether you already have service with AT&T. If not, it seems that you usually have to pay $25 month to month or you can prepay six months or more at $20 per month. I’m sure there are other variables, but that’s what I’m familiar with.

I've actually read some commentary on this topic a while back and from the little bit that I piced together from that, my understanding is that the EV makers like Rivian and Tesla (and honestly probably even some of the newer, more tech-forward ICE vehicles) rely on the cellular connection for some of the basic vehicle functions (OTA updates, error reports, basic app functionality, etc.) at a much deeper level than legacy vehicles did, so the manufacturers are keeping at least some cellular connectivity in place even for those who don't subscribe (which, of course entails some monthly cost to the manufacturers). Even on EVs, basic subscribers lose some features (like hotspot & likely entertainment / navigation data) if they don't have a user-paid subscription, and putting those features behind a reasonably priced plan is intended to both reduce company-paid data costs & further increase take rates for user-paid subscriptions.

By pricing the plans at relatively reasonable prices (like $100/year), the EV manufacturer basically hope to increase take rates on paid subscriptions (to offset the basic connectivity costs they're paying even on non-subscribers and/or make some profit), while the legacy autos typically price higher since they don't have to pay basic connectivity for non-subscribers meaning anyone who subscribes is 100% profit above what they pay the carrier for that specific subscriber.

I got my LE R1S the middle of may and I recall reading somewhere the ATT plan was free for a year. I have connectivity issues with it all of the time, so not sure how valuable it is to me. (I don’t miss much in switching from my prior Tesla Y to my R1S, but MY was superior in that regard as I never had issues with that aspect.)

Why not just add the bloody $100/yr (if that is the price) for 3 years; to the price of the car? Don't think most will notice.
Connectivity is already built into the price because Rivian and Tesla require it for the vehicles to work back end things like trip planning etc. They want as much telemetry as well as the car will give them to see what features customers use, and don't to ensure their software is designed with the end user in mind.

The manufacturer essentially just double dips, and has you pay for at least a portion of the connectivity so you as well can have access to it for music streaming etc.

if they give us more actual apps to use, netflix, disney, youtube, apple music etc like Tesla offers; i'd be fine paying a 100$ fee for the year just like I do on my model Y. Need more features to make it worth it though...

Looks better for shareholders and other potential investors to be able to say “we have $XXXX of recurring income every month with XXXX paid subscriber base that is already acquired.”

If they offered AA/CP there would be absolutely no need for me to use their data. But IMHO that’s the whole point and why they won’t offer alternatives. We’re a very captive audience without any other viable solutions.

This 100% I was about to say the same thing. When I can watch a movie while charging I may actually have a use for the data in the truck at that point you can charge me. Until then I feel like the data they are collecting off of me is worth more to them then the cell service, Hotspot I dont use is to me.
