Some people have tinted the ceiling and had no issues, and it seems like a logical step that might help. On the other hand, some people have posted that installers refuse to do the roof glass because it can contribute to cracking.

FWIW, I just got my R1S ceramic-tinted 75% dark incl. the roof and it is definitely hot to touch since the ceramic is absorbing the UV and heat. That said, I asked the installer about the issue and he said in all his years he's never heard of a ceramic-tinted glass breaking due to the heat absorption; of course he was looking to sell me the tinting, so there's that. ;-)

EDIT/UPDATE: I was able to speak with the regional manager who also put his head together with the local SC. They decided to waive the cost as a one-time gesture of goodwill. I don't know which of my several mitigating factors pushed them to cover it, but I'm glad its handled and I can't blame them for the initial pushback/rejection.

I've had our R1S for about 3 months now. We've had three service center visits as well as two at home visits (tailgate wouldn't close, panel gaps, frunk misaligned, rear air vent fell out, air compressor didn't work, NFC card reader in door didn't work, and a few other small things). I went into the purchase knowing we were "early adopters" and willing to jump through the hoops to get everything fixed. I've been impressed with the service advisors and the process to fix stuff on a relatively timely manner....until today...

...I took the R1S in because the front moonroof was cracked with some circular cracks. I was certain this must be a warranty issue as only the inside glass was cracked, and the exterior glass was still completely fine. The advisor took a look and saw what "might" be an impact mark on the inside of the glass and deemed it not able to be warrantied? I was shocked to say the least. I don't know what possibly could have hit the roof with the force required to break it. His comment to that was that the glass is pretty fragile as its thin to save weight, so they've seen a decent amount of this. The out of pocket cost is $2,814.47 including four hours of labor, and of course there are no third party options.

I'm now in a situation where I've endured so much with this car and now the company is trying to put what I firmly feel is a manufactures defect on me with no other real options. This has left such a bad taste in my mouth that if I can't get them to cover this sunroof issue, I just don't want to keep the car as I have to assume the issues will just continue and Rivian will do what they can to decline to cover them.

Would love any advice if anyone has dealt with (and resolved) anything similar.

Thanks!
Next week he Minneapolis SC is taking a look at my passenger side headlamp which I believe suffered a spontaneous full thickness fracture with no impact of rocks or birds. I was just driving in the right lane at 65 mph and heard it pop.
I'm an optometrist an have some idea of stress fractures of plastic structures compressed unevenly from the edges.
The material of the headlamp and roof "glass" is most likely polycarbonate (Lexan?) such as is used in opthalmic lenses.
I have seen lenses molded by melting plastic pellets and injecting the liquid into precision molds.
My lens has no scratches or marks of any impact. The fractures are circular also.
I am going to suggest that Rivian received defecively molded parts from their supplier and ask them to move the blame up the supply chain to their vendor.

I hate hearing all this. I have been one of the lucky ones who just got the truck and drove it. I have yet to have any further contact with Rivian. I covered our glass roof the day we got the truck. It will remain this way as long as we have it. The glass roof, the powered tonneau cover, and the camp speaker were all stupid ideas.

What do you mean by saying “I covered our glass roof day one”? Do you mean with insurance or is there some kind of product you physically cover the top of the roof from the outside? Sorry, I’m just really curious if you have found a nice product for physical protection.

I'd certainly own up to it if I knew of any impact that would have caused it. The fact that its just a finger pointing game is what's frustrating to me. I guess I was naive in assuming that given all the prior issues and patience I've had that I wouldn't have to fight so hard for a glass panel in what sounds like has the potential to become a class action issue for them down the road at this point anyway.

Sad that this will likely be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me.
That's saying something coming from a guy who owns a Pantera!

To be clear, I do have insurance and don't have any problem using it if needed. I also don't anticipate having any issues with my insurance company covering the cost as I have full glass coverage.

My issue is needing to go through insurance when I don't believe this was caused by anything I did. Sadly, I think its cavalier to think in this day and age that a claim won't have any impact on your premium.
Also to be fair, insofar as a good insurance company will cover you when safety is a concern (I might be concerned if my glass roof is compromised...), they also hate being on the hook for paying claims. I have heard stories of Insurance companies being in litigation with other insurance companies for YEARS after claims were filed, and paid out, pinning the blame so they don't have to absorb the hits.

SO, why not talk to your insurance, explain the situation, and have THEIR litigators talk to Rivian about whose fault it is? In this instance, I think you could probably explain to your insurance company "this wasn't my fault, nor negligence on my behalf" and I don't think your rates should be impacted.

Best case, they get you made whole with a new roof immediately and come to an agreement with Rivian later.

I wish Rivian offered "Sun roof" option. It would be awesome feeling as I drive with open roof in cool evening.

When they PPF and tinted mine, the company decided to apply an exterior UV film. They said they use it on Tesla's all the time and it's a cleaner install. I'll have to find out what the product is called. I've had zero heat gain from the roof since they applied it.

By covered I mean to cut out all light and heat. See post #27 in this thread. It explains it and has pictures.

Agreed. Would snatch up the sun roof option in a hurry as opposed to the all glass. The glass likely is heavier too.

I'm going to knock on some wood here but I've had my truck officially a year now, and the roof glass hasn't been an issue. Then again I don't think Kim Java knows where I live so I'm probably safe.
As long as you confine it to "knock on wood," because even small taps on the glass could be fatal for that fragile piece of under-engineered material.

I have a broken roof glass as well. I was leaning over the top of the roof, standing in the door opening. I put a little weight in the glass with the palm of my hand and it cracked instantly. It was very spongy with very little force, palm of my hand with bent arm. I received a $2400 cost to replace it. This is definitely not what I would expect from an off road capable truck. The roof glass is ridiculously weak.
