The gen 2 suspension is much better with the noises. I didn't realize how Loud my gen 1 was until I got my tri.
Valid, but your gen1 could’ve also had been as quiet if service used revised components available to all. Gen1 owners do NOT need to get a gen2 to make it this quiet. Open service tickets, and with some persistence you can achieve similar results. It’s not a gen2 thing, it’s a revision of component things. Some late gen1’s already had a lot of this in place already.

How much do you still hear the half-shafts?

The suspension on my late model Gen 1 Quad is already pretty quiet. When I hit big potholes there’s maybe a little suspension noise, but seems like that happens in even the best cars if the pothole is deep enough. So as you said, they probably already started including some of the Gen 2 suspension updates in late model Gen 1s. Part of the Gen 2 suspension update includes better rubber components to help deaden excessive vibrations, mentioned here

Perhaps late Gen 1s have some or all of the updated rubber components? As mentioned earlier, the knuckle on my Gen 1 is nearly identical to a Gen 2 so there were certainly some changes.

However, I’m pretty sure the air springs on my Gen 1 are the original Monroe units. Would be cool to see if Rivian would retrofit the updated Gen 2 springs on my car. I’ll guess I’ll put in a service request and see what happens.

any chance you could snap a few shots of the suspension on your Gen 2 Tri, front and back wheels? That may elucidate some of the differences.

I don't know much about suspensions, so if you want a different angle or something, I can do my best to accommodate.

thanks….i’ll spend a little time analyzing those shots. I may be able to determine if there are some Gen 2 suspension mods already in late Gen 1s.

Gen2 air springs are retrofitablemto gen1. Our 2023 R1S has them on all four corners, and the difference is substantial. Even the steering wheel
Is smoother. Happy to say our R1 is quiet and smooth, aside from axel design noise.
ok, I found Rivian’s official bulletin for the chirping suspension issue

Rivian R1T R1S Gen 1 Rolling Suspension changes IMG_3360

anyone who requests this fix should get their front air springs updated by Rivian under warranty. However, they say nothing about the rear air springs but it sounds like you got those replaced as well. Since Rivian’s primary suspension upgrade on Gen 2 is a redesign of the rear air springs, those are what I’d like to have retrofitted (assuming they’re actually using the new Gen 2 part on Gen 1s.)

@jpmc86 if possible, could you take a look at the Gen 2 suspension photos that Donald just posted and see if your replacement air springs match?

I just put in a service request for this suspension update. I guess I’ll find out if there’s any improvement in March when they do the work.

Same PN, slightly different revision.

Correct. These new ones, are the gen2 struts. They have rubber from Firestone, where the old ones were goodridge.

All gen 1s have the old dampers I believe. Am I correct?

I think later models might have had the new ones. Point is, if you go to service now and they replace any damper, it will be a gen2 PN.
