Just plugged into an Electrify America charger for the first time in a while, and initially got an error message that I need to update my payment method in the Rivian app to charge. Unplugged and tried again, and it went back to the normal EA behavior.

A sign of things to come, or just a glitch?

Not sure what normal behavior means. I don't use EA often, but I always have to start the charge from the app or pay at the charger via card. On the EA site, Rivian is not listed as a plug-and-charge partner on their site: Plug&Charge | Electrify America

You sure you P&C with EA?

My read of OP's post is that he knows EA doesn't currently partner with Rivian for plug-and-charge, but the error message he got indicates that they might be working on or testing it now. I guess we'll know if it comes out in a few months - if they're smart they would get it out now, before the heavy summer travel season.

This is what I meant, sorry. Guess I could have been more clear.

I know that a unified payment method for charging was one of the last EV-related policies from the Biden administration, so perhaps this is related to that. 🤷‍♂️

It would be nice. Idiots always seem to scratch up the screens of the charger so having to navigate them to pay sucks.

My bad, I see what you meant now. Just the fact that EA knew it was a Rivian is encouraging.

I hope it's coming. At least if it's smart enough to recognize the EA membership. It wouldn't be nearly as useful if it doesn't recognize the membership.

I'd say about half the issues I've had at EA stations is related to the payment readers not working correctly. P&C would make a huge difference with first-time charge success rate.

Do we have confirmation that Rivian actually supports proper CCS ISO/IEC 15118 Plug and Charge?

Right now, they only support Rivian's own "plug and charge," Tesla's (which also is completely nonstandard) and EVgo, which doesn't use CCS ISO/IEC 15118. Rivian doesn't support any true CCS ISO/IEC 15118 Plug and Charge provider. It may be that Rivian simply doesn't support CCS ISO/IEC 15118.

EA has been a data trouble point for Rivian since the get go. EA doesn't seem to care to provide the usage data (stalls avail/total) to Rivian. So, to think they would work on plug and charge is just wishful thinking currently.

Did the display on the charger head say Rivian, or did your app? The app would know if you have your vehicle profile in there.....

VWs plug and charge at EA so there's hope, especially with the joint venture. Having EA overcharge me every time sucks.

I don’t recall what the charger said, but the Rivian app gave me an error saying that I needed to update my payment method. To me, that would seem to suggest that the charger initiated some sort of payment handshake, but then rejected the car, which the app interpreted as payment being declined or something.
