You'll find randomness in the Shop. As someone else noted Max packs with 20" all season wheels that are only available on the dual/standard as one example. I've also seen a YouTube video of someone doing a review of a Tri-motor, with the all-vinyl dash like yours. I didn't think that was possible on a Tri, but what do I know?

I picked a Dual Large from the Shop, due in tomorrow, that only has the Dynamic Roof with no premium sound, now they only seem to come bundled together. For a company that needs to optimize, they seem to produce too many variations, and then change them every few weeks/months. Not sure how they can ever efficiently scale with this approach.

I'm guessing there are Shop oddballs due to batching runs, materials on hand, shortages of certain parts, etc. and a lot of pressure to finish inventory and ship it hoping someone buys them.

As for the wood trim, I agree it makes a significant difference to the perceived quality of the interior and the entire vehicle. Also wonder what was on the Monroney.

Thanks for the replies. I will add that the actual vehicle summary did say Black mountain....and that was it, no "+dark ashwood". So the vehicle summary is exactly as it should be. It was an oversite on both our parts. We were going back and forth on many available vehicles trying to nail down a "blue" one in stock and when he found this one he suggested it and that's what was ordered. It just needed to be transferred in from another service location. The thing is he didn't inform me that although this is the blue exterior that it doesn't have the black ashwood interior. And why would I have caught it since wit's not an option that can be order on a large or max pack anyway. He is the expert and see's these variations all the time. He should have caught it.

I will speculate the following:
1. In the early release of the Gen 2 perhaps this was an option. Gen 2 released in June 2025, not sure they started labeling them as a 2025 right away, seems early but I know they generally label vehicle in the fall time as the upcoming model year. Either way this would had to have been an unsold "early" build and I wouldn't want an early build anyway.
2. Could a base model with this basic interior and small pack have come in but maybe had a battery defect and somehow they just swapped it with a max pack and relisted it for the much more expensive max pack price?

We still want an R1S. The problem is here in Ontario Canada there are no blue units in stock and in order to get the EV upgrade rebate it has to be a unit from stock (not a customized order). How dumb is that, that instead of just letting us order exactly what we want and queueing it up for production they are making us wait until randomly one day hopefully a unit with our color and options natural enters inventory. Rolling eyes!

Just my take on the rebate portion, they offer rebates or discounts to move in stock models. It is an incentive for people to buy current inventory. It is great if they have something you like or you can live with to save a few dollars but it defeats the purpose of the incentive if they allow for orders to be placed on units they need to assemble.

They will allow you to order what you want as long as it is still in the configurator you are just paying for that choice.

In the dealership model this exists as well, a dealer will discount units that have been on the lot for a while to move the inventory but the discount is on that specific unit.

Was there no difference in price?

Ocean Coast + Dark Ash Wood interior $2,900

This is the regular price for this option in Canada for the dual. Free on the Tri.

They have a limestone one in stock but I presume you've already considered your options.

Yeah, I took delivery of one of the first batch of dual motor R1Ses when they first came out (no preorder, just got a call that they had some unallocated and if I could buy it in like 2 days it was mine) and my buddy (who bought one 1-2 months thereafter) and I talk about how mine was configured like a quad (options/packages) but when the ordering system on the website was updated for dual motors at the time it was effectively impossible to order it that exact way.

I think they produce a number of vehicles on the line and then sometimes options mix changes -- but the vehicle is already built. Oh well.

The in-shop configurator changes A LOT, even week to week. That dynamic roof? It was separate from Premium Sound for a few months, before they got tied together in a "Sound and Vision" package.

For a while they offered a full-front PPF option, and a full-car-PPF I think? And some paint colors come and go quickly, as well as various interior options. Like dark floormats used to be an option just a few months ago, but now there's only one. There was briefly a Large+ battery, and that's gone too.

I think you're right in that they set the configurator based on what inventory they have or anticipate having at the factory, and on top of that they're constantly iterating on packages/trim options to see if there are any magic combos people like....

Sounds like an unusual situation based on your follow-up. The vinyl vs the dark ash wood is a major difference and, personally, I wouldn’t be okay with the vinyl. The wood really makes the truck’s interior special, especially on the steering wheel. Hope you find one soon.

I'm not super picky, and yet that wood is really pleasing. Last week some passengers commented on it making the car feel so high end.

Yeah, you made the right decision to reject delivery, the wood definitely makes the interior. It's also not just a quick dash swap, it's also all the door cards and a few other things as they all carry some portion of the wood trim theme.
+1 here. That pleather wrapped section isn’t comparable to the wood in my opinion. Accepting that compromise would have gnawed a hole in my brain every time I hopped in for a drive.

I would have looked at the sticker to validate what the vehicle was, Rivian should even be able to supply this upon request.

I know that quite often Rivian will make vehicles with combinations of options that are not available in configuration. And they do so on purpose because they need to get rid of stock of this wheel, or they swap interior colors because that's more available, etc.
This is one of the hazards of just-in-time manufacturing. You have part X available, but your customer wants Y. So you make a vehicle with X and hope you can still sell it, just to keep the line moving.

Sometimes Manufacturers are forced to produce vehicles with a critical component missing. So they build them, ship them to a parking lot off-site, and employ people to install those parts when they become available.
