I think those people who are saying "no EV without home charging" are a bit out of line and placing their experience/situation upon you and yours.
Exactly. The world around us is bigger and more varied than our own. I'm always put off by elitists who say "if you rent you shouldn't have an EV". Here in SoCal, a 600 sq. ft. starter condo can cost over $1M. I too would love to be able to charge at home while I sleep—if every single one of these people are willing to send donations so I can buy a $1M closet. Seriously, get over yourselves. There is more ways to live besides the way you live yours.

A friend of mine told me that driving an EV is more like flying an airplane than driving a car. You have to think ahead and plan. That is an exercise that I enjoy. If you have chargers in your location that you can turn to and the price is right go for it. If you do go for it I hope you enjoy it . My R1 S has been a blast.

I think those people who are saying "no EV without home charging" are a bit out of line and placing their experience/situation upon you and yours....

My point: do some research and you may find options rather than a home Level 2 charger that may work in your own circumstance...
No one, I believe is saying or implying that the OP or others should not get an EV if one cannot charge at home.. Furthermore, definitely not placing others experience or situation upon on anyone else. This is a forum and simply sharing info.

The point is not if one can find non-home L2/L3 charging options. Clearly there are. The point is why would one want to be inconvenienced on a regular basis compared to ICE/PHEV alternative. It is a hassle have to goto somewhere and charge and wait. The clear advantage of home L2 charging is that it happens while one is sleeping or doing something else. There is NO inconvenience.

As a 7 year Tesla and almost 2 year Rivian EV owner, I really like not having to fill up the tank at a gas station (I actually do as we also own an ICE vehicle) for these two EVs. I just plug it in at night, sometime every night, and forgettaboutit and in the morning its good to go.

At the end of the day, EV is just a transportation, a vehicle and a utility. I like it simple and easy. My weekend toy car, that's something else.

Oh! I wish we had that! We get no such breaks with our local POCO. At best, we get charged $.17kW, and that goes up to "Winter Rates" from Sept - April to the mid/upper-$.20's. I even have solar on the house that I use to generate the Net Credits and offset the winters.

This has been a learning curve to get into the balancing act for me. This past January, I had a couple panic attacks and did some 32-amp / hours-long full charges (from around 30% battery to 85%) anticipating emergency road trips (that never materialized ). Those two sessions blew though our Net Credit bank in short order giving me one horrendous electric bill come February(nothing left to offset). So I have become very judicious with L2 charging; I keep the home charging set for specific hours (daytime when the solar is pumping), and I keep the charger set to under 12 amps. I can see the power draw on my solar app. The L2 pulls around 1.8kW at 8amps, around 4.5kW for 12amps. Much above that and the charger starts pulling more than the panels are generating, grabbing the balance from the grid.

For now, I don't mind the weekly drive to the DCFC to top off the battery.
I’m sure I’m missing something but this doesn’t make much sense to me. From what I understand you pay $.17- $.20 at home which is easy and convenient but instead you take time out of your day to drive to a DCFC just to pay $.35. To me that just seems like you’re throwing away money and time but there must be something im just not seeing.

It comes down to time. I can get the R1T recharged from the 30's to 85% in around 40 minutes using DCFC. Home would take me the better part of a day, and I would be sacrificing the Net Credits that we need come November.

Out here in CA where we have the joy of the PG&E Monopoly even with Solar, our rates are still crazy high. On our solar plan we pay about $.15 for electricity and about $30 (PG&E really doesn't easily too you the rate) for about $.44 total per kWh. On a typical monthly bill, we pay for the electricity we use (the $.15 rate) and then PG&E tracks the total amount of energy delivered vs. amount sent to the grid on an annual basis.

With two EVs, a jacuzzi, swim spa, and AC, we always import more electricity than we sell to PG&E and our true-up bill last month and was about $2400. Yep, that one hurts. I haven't bothered to do track down he numbers, but we sort of figure that is the price for us to drive BOTH cars (the Tesla ONLY ever charges at home) on an annual basis. I challenge most anyone out there to be able to drive two ICE cars for that price on an annual basis.

Yea $.17-$.20 I'd pay all day for home charging. CA is expensive. Edison people are getting ripped heavily approaching $.40

I wouldn't worry about a few solar credits.

Don’t even think of owning an EV without home or work charging. You will hate it.

With home charging an EV is more convenient than ICE. Without home charging it will be less convenient than ICE.
