Ever since the update, charging at some point drops from 7.5kW/19 miles/hr down to half that at around 8 miles/hr making home charging useless for me. For the past 3 1/2 months I have had no issues maintaining the 19 miles/hr at home. There is nothing wrong with the charger (Tesla level 2 with adaptor) charges our Tesla just fine, and it is not overheating and nothing else seems different that I can tell.

is there some additional setting somewhere that I am unaware of? Once it drops i have to stop and restart charging but it will eventually drop again. As of now, I don't know if it is a specific time or duration when it drops.

Any thoughts?

Also, I assume there is no way to revert the update?

Try a different adapter? Did you ever drop it? Or at least check the pins on the adapter and the port on your car for debris

There was a thread in here about spiders and other creepy-crawly things getting mushed in connectors. I have to believe that there is at least some increase in impedance when using an adapter. If a bug got stuck between the pins, it may cause just enough resistance to heat the cable to the point the charger or truck drops the amps.

Plus, with an adapter, there are more places for crawling things to get stuck.

When the amps drop, is the cable warm (or warmer than usual)?

FWIW I have charged once since the update (Gen 1, large) and the session was completely normal.

I doubt this is from the update, most likely the timing is coincidental. If the update failed it should simply kill charging, like happened to me.

Nearly two years ago, just after I got my R1S, I had my level 1/2 charging die. Everything else including Level 3 charging was fine. Rivian Service swapped out the onboard charger hardware to no avail before re-installing the software, which fixed it. The last update hadn’t installed fully.

In additions bug clearing I clean my contact pins and slots with a q-tip and ribbing alcohol to get off additional buildup.

Check the charger plug, R1 port, and the adapter for any kind of contamination. And if you have an opportunity, try L2 charging via direct J1772 to remove the adapter from the equation.

While it is normal for L2 charging to derate in hotter weather, I would not expect to derate from 32A to 16A unless temps are insanely hot (although I just noticed you are using an adapter which may be a contributing factor). I can charge at 48A (~11.5 kW) during the winter but as soon as my garage heats up over about 85F, it starts to derate pretty quickly. During the summer I configure the truck to charge at only 40A and it will charge without derating even when my garage is over 100F.

If there is no obvious contamination at the connections, open a ticket with Rivian.

I don't suppose you have a 14-50 plug where you can test with the portable charger? Going at 7.5kW isn't even all that high for level 2. It'd be useful to duplicate the behavior with two different chargers.

I'm not sure this is what you were asking, but there is a place within the truck where charging amperage can be limited. It was on the settings in the energy screen but I don't actually know if it's the same with the new update. That said if it were enabled it'd never start high and drop, it would be throttled from the get go.

Also no, Rivian won't roll back updates.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Checked the adaptor no signs of damage, bugs, etc. Never ran hot at all. Could be a coincidence paired with the update, but I never had any issues whatsoever prior. Maybe the adaptor going bad already? it is the A2Z model.

Next charge going to use the Rivian portable charger and see if the issue persists.

I used the Tesla Wall Charger with Lectron Adapter from NACS to J1772, and still getting 19 mi/hr after the update to 2025.18.30

This is my experience as well, though it started about a year after purchase (’22). I’m good at a constant 40A

I’ve come to learn that Rivian’s hate adapters. Mine has been doing this crap even before the update. But only at 48 amps. If I lower it to like 38-40, no problems. Tesla universal wall connector. And my model Y? Never a problem at 48 amps EVER. So don’t give me the ā€˜it’s your charger BS’ cuz I ain’t buying it

What I have noticed in Coachella valley on the hot summer days, charging in the garage the plug can get hot and the charger de-rates. Once it de-rates it for the session, even after it cools off, it does not go back to the higher rate. If I unplug and plug back in it will go higher until it heats up again.

I know it is heat related as my other place does not get as hot and it has never happened there. It also does not happen in the valley when it is not super hot.

As others have mentioned, lowering the charge rate, especially under 40 amps, I use 36 on hot days, seems to take much longer before it drops down effectively charging faster for the session.
