Rivian R1T R1S Latest Update Killed My IOS App 1749315810348-5

Yes - I realize it's time for a new phone (I'm rocking an iPhone 10x) because the new Rivian app requires a version of IOS that I can't load on my phone, but I was fine with the limited functionality of the app I had. Why did they need to remove my ability to see charging status, turn on climate control, and open the frunk. This recent change turned my iPhone into a very limited fob (without the trunk & frunk). We have a "trickle-down" process for phones in my house, and clearly I'm at the bottom of the food chain. As you can imagine, it goes like this: Wife (always the newest phone), 4 daughters, and then me.

Looks like my wife is getting a new phone...I was hoping to wait for the September release, but I don't think I can wait that long.

So…you own an $80k+ vehicle, and you’re complaining about upgrading your…8 year old phone?

First world problems…
That's hardly the point here. The app knows what version is being installed to the vehicle, and can absolutely be configured to warn users about incompatibilities with their device BEFORE installing.

Imagine if the brake pedal on your car was swapped out with a tiny sharp point, and someone told you "it's an $80k car, you can't afford the compatible $2,000 branded driving shoes once every... 8 years??"

It's hardly about the price, it's just not a good way to distribute and update software.

Because they don’t want to have to maintain and troubleshoot multiple versions. Especially because it would be for the vast minority of users. Simple.

you complain about this being Rivian’s problem. It’s not a problem. Apple has deprecated your phone, not Rivian. Pay the Apple tax, get a new phone and move on.

don’t worry, the new app is pretty bad. it doesn’t update when my vehicle is charging at home due to “limited connectivity”. mind you, it had strong WiFi and cell signal out on my driveway. the app made it look like it was charging all night, of course it wasn’t. froze charging status at 64%, woke up this morning and it finally updated to — 68%. mind you it’s set to charge to 70%. is it actually 68% or 70%? time to play Rivian’s new game of “guess your charge” since the app is terrible.

yes, i tried closing the app and starting it again.. doesn’t matter. iPhone 16 Pro so it’s not that.

I gotta agree with @McLovin. In my home the flow is downhill, starting with me, then my Wife , then my Daughter. Unless your girls are all driving Rivians, it’s time to “Man up!” Lol

I know we all choose phones for various reasons but the iPhone has many problems working with the Rivian platform. My wife has an apple phone and loves it, I have an Android based phone and never had issues with the Rivian platform.
I have a feeling this is more of an apple issue than a Rivian issue.

Indeed...My wife agreed that it's time for me to get a new phone. Translated? My wife will get a new iPhone 16Pro, one of my daughters will get her 14Pro, and I'll get a 12, but at least I'll be rolling again with the Rivian.

Okay - This is a random update to this...I can't use the app to do anything other than unlock the doors and drive the Rivian as noted above.

I installed an "Open Frunk" shortcut on my Apple Watch and, on a whim, decided to try it yesterday walking out the to Rivian with my groceries. Miraculously, it worked and the frunk opened! I REALLY don't understand that, but I'm not going to complain. It's a shortcut I use all of the time as I'm walking out of the grocery store so I'm thrilled, but really thought it was odd that the watch worked when the phone didn't.

My general rule of thumb is to ditch a device as soon as the latest OS release no longer supports it. For you, that would have been September 2023. Edit, you daughter’s iPhone 12 is a 5 year old device already, so be ready to encounter the same issue in a couple years. This is going to constantly an issue with being at the tail end of an upgrade path that is 8 years long (4 devices at 2 years each).

For the Android users spouting off, “pay the Apple tax”, lay off it. You’re not funny and not being helpful. Apple supports devices with OS upgrades for much longer than Android supports those devices. This is an Issue caused by how Rivian packaged their latest versions of the app to require an OS version from less than 2 years ago, at least on iOS.

Yeah - I think this is actually the first time I've hit this with any of our iPhones. I've gotten the warning with a couple of other apps, but they let me stay on the "old" version that runs on my IOS version. I have a I had hoped to hold out until September when the 17 comes out, but it's not looking like that's possible now.

I'm doomed...One of my daughters just lost her phone in a lake while kayaking! My wife will indeed be getting a new phone, but the trickle-down will stop before it gets to me!
