Love our R1S. Have had it almost 2 years now. But coming from a Kia Telluride with 1 single Camera, no highway mapping garbage and going to a superior vehicle. I put the Telluride up against Rivian any day of the week when it comes to the Driver plus system. Using Driver + is living on the edge of life and death. It jerks and swerves and suddenly brakes, ping pongs etc... My wife is afraid to use it. I use it very rarely. We live in Utah and drive the I15 daily. It is a nice big highway. Then aside for those issues, in some random parts 10 mins north of Salt Lake... Driver plus just becomes not available and not mapped... what gives?

Anyhow, tell your story, I know there are more. Hopefully the Gen2 owners have a better system than what we do.

I stopped using it as it's just too unpredictable. If it's supposed to relieve driver fatigue, it's failing. At least I know I'm not going to suddenly stomp on brakes when doing 70mph with no other vehicles out in front of us.

I haven't used it as much as many others here, but I have experienced some of those behaviors too. I pretty much stopped using it so I don't have to stress about it.

I don't trust any autonomous driving tech so it was not really surprising to me and wasn't a big selling point for me in the first place.

I wonder how many people actually understand that Driver+ is not the so-called autonomous or autopilot they think it is. But rather the next evolution of [basic] cruise control, aimed at reducing driver's workload but not completely replacing the driver.

True I do get this absolutely. But other comparable solutions are MUCH MUCH better, and even with your hands on the wheel, the vehicle drives you into walls suddenly or brakes with nothing in front of you etc.. it is supposed to be as you said "complimenting" not replacing, but unfortunately it;s just not good enough to "compliment" even.

One aspect I cannot stand is how sensitive the "hands free" driving is to any movement of the steering wheel. It locks the car rock solid right in the middle of the lane which is just a terrible thing to do when you have big rig trucks veering over constantly from the right side. So in normal driving, I like to "edge to the left" when passing large trucks. The highway assist plus doesn't let you do that. It immediately shuts off. Not sure if other "self driving" systems allow a little more leeway in lane positioning.

I just had one of these on our most recent road trip. Driving along on the freeway at 70mph. There were grinding marks on the road where the freeway used to go and they removed the paint. Car suddenly swerved to follow the grind marks instead of the paint marks for the existing freeway. Luckily I was holding on to the wheel and pulled it back. Would have pulled us straight into the barrier.

Ive had the car start to go to follow these types of lines before then correct itself. Not sure it would have done that in this case since I manually intervened pretty quick.

I’ve never had swerving behavior, vin around 7000. Early on, there were a couple of instances of phantom braking (overpasses), but haven’t seen that in over a year. Also, it not being available on random stretches of major freeways is just silly. I haven’t used it with the latest software though.

I use it routinely on longer highway trips, hasn't tried to kill me yet. It's quirky, and by no means perfect, but it's plenty usable in the right situations.

My most recent trip did have some quirkiness, it did brake hard and slow down 25 mph for seemingly no reason (no one around me), and on 1 road the Driver+ was only available for like a 10 mile stretch and ended without warning. But I mainly use it to pay a little less attention and relax a bit, I am always ready to take over.

I use my R1T’s Driver+ almost every trip. But do get the phantom panic braking with nothing in front of us. My wife also will never use the feature because of this. And I had to turn off the lane departure warnings entirely.

To compare our 2023 Honda has adaptive cruise control that is exponentially more reliable, almost no know incidents on the same roads, and coupled with their Lane Keep Assist, is nearly autonomous. Hondas very polished system came standard on a car that was 24k new.

Rivian’s Driver+ is not quite ripe yet.

It has some quirks, but never tried to kill me. It doesn't like construction zones for obvious reasons... and those plastic poles they put in Los Angeles fast trak lanes to separate traffic will slow it down, but overall I'm okay with it. Recent trip from Mammoth to LA County and another trip to and back from Vegas were easy peezy.

Interesting. Until I read this, I forgot about these types of issues. Do not get me wrong... I am still a huge Tesla fan and their tech is way better than Rivian, or anything else, but their 'autonomous' driving systems 'tried to kill me', as you say, way more than Rivian ever has. Honestly, besides the rare. and mild. phantom braking and occasional lane assist aggressiveness, I have never had an issue with a Rivian 'trying to kill me.'

I do use the ACC and that's been pretty solid, I'm guessing that only uses radar not the cameras so harsh shadows don't seem to affect it?
