FSD has improved so much but there are really going to be Robo’s out in Austin this year. Yikes.

Individuals like Rober and Jerry Rig have sadly entered the realm of the absurd and unrealistic in their videos. Disguising a wall to look like the continuation of the road to test any ADAS?
C'mon. Unrealistically stupid.
Rober would do well to stick to porch-pirate traps.

A painted wall to fool self-driving cars is objectively less absurd than a glitter bomb attack on porch pirates, or...a squirrel olympics obstacle course? I think that's kind of a judgment call, personally.

I actually really liked the Space Mountain portion of the video a lot more, I wish he he dedicated a video to that!

I think you missed the point completely.

But it's entertaining to me to see people who are salty about others successes, when they perceive them as lesser for reasons that still make little-to-no-sense (ala the trend of calling out 'influencers' like some kinda holier than thou 'gotcha').

If you don't like it, move along.

The realities are much bigger than your nonsensical take.

The fact is: Marks' content still has a ton of value from a science and engineering perspective. AND he makes things entertaining. My kiddo idolizes him. If my kid thinks Engineering is cool because of Mark and his shenanigans, THANK YOU MARK ROBER.

Hell, I think he's cool. I'd hang out with him for a week. He's the kinda guy I'd want on my team in the apocalypse too. And I've been working professionally as an Engineer for decades now.

Tell you what. Give me examples of a camouflaged wall across any road, any road at all in America that one may find. One single solitary actual, living example and go from there. Perhaps that also will help to reach common ground on what "objectivity" is. Will also help if you please can define what the hell "less absurd" means. You know, "less full" is right up there with it also.

Hey, nothing wrong with them and your idolizing of them, your kid included. Have at it. I myself quickly dismiss stupid stuff like this. And hit the thumbs-down while at it. Diversity in taste and interpretation of most everything is beautiful. Try learning to embrace it, and hope that eventually you teach that to your offspring also!

Wow, again missing the point entirely.
Did you watch the video? Like at all? (Clearly you didn't--judging a book by its cover to be intentionally misinformed is a level of arrogance that you should probably keep to yourself)

They (and I mean they, because it wasn't just Mark, he has a team) broke down the limitations of both systems (a system using lidar and one using exclusively cameras) and how they respond to different environments, including VERY REAL scenarios (light glare, extreme weather) and shows you SCIENTIFICALLY how they work.

The "Fun factor" was adding the wall. We obviously (those of us with a brain and common sense) can understand that Mark doesn't actually believe someone's going to go Acme acres wil-e-coyote on you in the middle of your commute.

Just because you prefer to ingest your scientific wisdom a different way doesn't automatically mean the way this is presented is in any way shape or form lesser, or inaccurate.

You know what's easier than your virtue signaling? Shutting up. It would've cost you nothing to say nothing. If you don't like it move along.

What do you expect is going to happen here? We're going to read your post and everyone's going to go "oh yeah, this bigsky guy seems like he's smarter than the average person, so maybe I hate Mark's approach to education too!"

Or Mark's team's going to happen by this very forum and change all of their ways because you have a bug up your butt? Get over yourself.

The Tesla failed to see through simulated fog and rain and ran into the mannequin, versus the Lidar stopped under both conditions.

Watch the video before criticizing. Lidar is going to be required for true self driving cars. Fog, rain, snow, and low visibility conditions are 100% real world.

I think most of you, on both sides of the argument, missed the point. And that is that a camera system can be tricked into thinking one thing, when a totally different thing is actually going on. And thats the weakness. The fact that he demonstrated this with a painted wall is neither here nor there. Think "white semi truck against white sky" which killed a Tesla Model S driver using FSD. Same again in 2019 in a Model 3. Can a Lidar system be tricked? For sure...but under far less likely circumstances.

Separately, if anyone has actually driven a Tesla, even in basic autopilot mode, you will have seen the limits of cameras. If its raining, or theres a lot of crap coming up from the road, or its foggy or snowing, kiss your FSD bye bye. How exactly is that going to work in most parts of the country. "Please pay me $8000 for FSD, but just know that 50% of the time its not going to work if you live in Michigan".

I'll admit i was a big Tesla fan early on re FSD. Having driven a Tesla for 4 years and used FSD many times, i will say that while it has gotten a lot better over the years, it still has fatal flaws. And i don't see those flaws ever getting fixed without Lidar. It will be interesting to use Rivians self driving when i get mine next week, and see how it compares.

1. They weren’t using FSD.
2. They disengaged autopilot before getting to the wall, watch the video.
3. This video was sponsored by a LIDAR company.

I am a Rober fan as well; he makes science accessible for lots of kids.

And I don't necessarily find it stupid to see how these vehicles' sensors behave using a painted wall as stimuli. And it was my kids who told me about Mark Rober. The glitter bombs are pure gold IMHO.
