We have had our R1T for about a month now. She is parked in the driveway behind our house. Most often she unlocks and prepares for travel when I walk through the garage. I always have my phone with me and I understand why this is happening. On some occasions though, I have to walk right up to her and almost touch her before she unlocks.

Can anyone provide any insight as to why she is so fickle?

It depends on the sleep state the vehicle is in. The deeper the sleep, i.e. longer time you (your phone key/FOB and associated Bluetooth signal) have been away from it, the deeper the sleep state to conserve battery.

Yes it's obvious the car is asleep sometimes. I don't use the proximity unlock/lock. When I use the fob to unlock sometimes it takes a couple second for the truck to respond. I'm assuming this is because it needs to wake up.

Super annoying, but I've been turning off bluetooth on my phone when I'm not using it. If I don't, the truck won't sleep much of the time because it's constantly unlocking/locking because I'm too close to it. Interestingly, with bluetooth off, HVAC off, music off, and the truck sleeping more, I'm seeing much better vampire drain. But then it means I have to remember to turn on bluetooth to open the truck again. I'm almost at a point where I want to turn off proximity completely and go back to the stone age and use the fob only with the buttons. That said, even with proximity off on the phone, I wonder if it'll still keep waking up when I get too close even if it doesn't unlock.

As you point out, there are other times where it takes 20+ seconds for the truck to unlock and you're just left standing there like an idiot. At that point I just open the Rivian app and it unlocks immediately.

Thanks for this info guys. As long as it won't hurt her, I'm going to leave it alone. I need my phone bluetooth on for my watch.

I use an iPhone, I found that if I have the app set for location services only when app is running that if I close the app I can walk around the garage as much as I want and the truck does not react. When I want to leave I just open the app.

Thanks for this info! I set it to always when I got my truck and it was definitely still unlocking / waking the truck when I force-closed the app, which I didn't expect. Just set it to only when running and now it behaves as expected.

Not sure if you’ve tried this yet, but when I’m at home and I know that I won’t be using my R1, I usually just close the Rivian App. This way even if I’m in the garage with my phone, my R1 won’t wake up.

As far as the lag behind unlocking R1, I concur with others that it's dependent on the state of sleep of the vehicle. At the end of the day, it comes down to patience.

As above, that's what I'd been doing. But it would still stay awake and constantly unlock/lock, so I started turning off bluetooth, which was just more annoying since I couldn't use other devices. The above note about setting the Location Services to only when app open seems to have helped, vs always on.
