Curious, do you usually have your phone in your hand? I do not keep mine in my pocket when driving so most of the time it is in my hand when I approach the vehicle and it works really well.

I do find if my hands are full and I have the phone in my back pocket sometimes I need to turn my pocket towards the vehicle for it to unlock, especially when approaching from the rear of the vehicle.

I know it is not super helpful, but your experience is not reflective of mine or my wife's in either of our gen 1 R1T or gen 2 R1S. On my T, the phone in my back pocket will often not work. If I turn my back to the truck it will, and if it is in a front jacket or front pants pocket, it will always work.

I would suggest you try a couple of things. First, take it out of the case and hold it in your hand when you approach the truck. If it works fine every time then there are a combo of things (case, clothing, pocket, etc.) blocking the signal. If it does NOT work fine every time, try a friend/spouse phone with same. If it does not work fine every time with either of the phones, then you have a vehicle problem and need to put in a service ticket. My 2c. Sorry it is not working well for you.

This has been an issue that I've had since the beginning of ownership. I've brought it up to the SC. First it was that my settings were wrong, had too many keys (wife upgraded her phone, so they said to delete the older key). I gave them my phone to do what they needed. Then they said it may be because I walk too fast? Its a mixed result. I'd say 30% of the time it seems to be there and 70 % I have to wait at least a minute and frequently have to get the phone out to unlock it directly. I've stood in front of it enough that Gear Guard Gary came to take a look as well.

I'm not sure if there are more than one sensor, but it seem when walking toward the R1s from the front it seems to work more frequently? Either way, I have my iPhone 16 with app open all the time, usually in my front pocket. I even put the phone up against the door handle hoping it will open but it doesn't. @TerryInHouston I feel you. It is stinks to have to stand their with hands full, drop all your stuff to the ground to pull out your phone and manually unlock your car.

Not sure where the issue is. They ultimately told me everything is working as expected.

I have an IPhone 13 and have to agree that something went south a few months back. I know my car is constantly locking and unlocking when it’s in the garage and I’m in the kitchen (located right above the garage), but it will no longer unlock if I’m standing next to the truck unless I wake my phone up by taping it or pressing one of the buttons

For me, I've found that turning on the climate control before I head out the truck, and everything seems to wake up quickly and proximity unlocking happens. If I do nothing, it will work about 80% of the time, but every once in a while I'll need to unlock it manually, and it won't remember my seat preferences.

There seems to be an issue with the BT on some of the cars while others work just fine. My R1S will blink the rear break light when I'm about 20-30 feet away and open the doors when I'm 3-5 feet away. I usually keep my phone (iPhone 15) in either my front trouser pocket or suit breast pocket. One slight difference with most people is that I don't use a case. That shouldn't make a difference though.

I was told that there are blind spots in the antennas on the Gen 1's so depending on how you approach the vehicle it could not actuate. Even my Gen 2 doesn't work as good as it can and I'm looking forward to the update that switches it to the better protocol.

OP, had the same infuriating experience for the last 3 years! I even stopped using PaaK.
Recently, my wife bought me a new phone, and it works amazingly every single time.

I scooped a fob. But I found that my wife always turns on battery save mode on her phone so she ends up having issues

Hey! Welcome to the club! My a$$hole Motorola RAZR 2023 does that all the f-ing time! Usually when my arms are full and I can't fish out the phone to open it an do a facial recognition unlock of the phone. And/or frequently, I get the "Would you like to pair your phone to the Rivian?" message. Of course rebooting the f@#king phone (yes, let's just stand there like an idiot for 90 seconds) restores the link and as Igor would say "...everything is as right as rain" again. For it to NOT happen as frequently, I have to make sure, before I leave the house - Reboot the phone, after it powers up, unlock it and leave it unlocked until I get to the R1T.

Rivian R1T R1S Looking Stupid Waiting for the Unlock !!!!! Untitled

I've had it with this POS phone; every other device we have - iOS and an older Android - works flawlessly. It's the phone, not the Rivian. The Moto RAZR is on it's way out; a replacement Android is actually in transit as of yesterday. Honestly, this phone never really worked well with the Rivian since day 1.

As another poster noted, something changed for me several months ago as well. iPhone 14 Pro had been working really well and now it’s a total crapshoot. Rarely works in a reasonable amount of time anymore. Still not as bad as my old Mach E which I eventually named “no key detected” (the warning on the screen) as I frequently couldn’t get the car to turn on because the PAAK was so unreliable.

It’s still a lot more convenient than relying on a key fob, at least for my purposes, despite the issues. Rivian made steady improvements to PAAK for the first couple of years so I still have hope that it’ll get back to being more practical in the near future.

I always have my key fob, always in my right front pocket, and my Gen 1 R1T always makes me wait. I hesitate to take it out of my pocket for a second or two, pull the fob out and just before I hit unlock, it will sometimes unlock. This is usually 10 seconds, every time. It’s pretty frustrating.
