Following this thread.

I wasn’t aware the 12V battery stops being charged at a certain point. I was at 49 miles range (~17%) yesterday (I have only been that low once or twice, maybe), then was just pulling into the garage to let it charge overnight. Two 12V battery errors came up just before plugging in (see below).

Second one about hazardous fumes scared TF out of me. I opened the windows and back out of the garage for a second… then thought maybe it really just needs a charge. Rolled back in, plugged in, and 5 mins later the errors disappeared… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

edit: errors persisted even back to 99% charge. Did a hard reset and errors gone now.

Following up, as it’s about to stop charging, here’s how much juice was added back in. Gives you an idea of percentage of SoC I had about 18 hours ago (only 26a draw on portable charger at this house).

For anyone from Rivian manufacturing that might be reading. Why can’t we install a fused positive jumper between the two 12 v batteries so that act as one larger battery??

There is no way in hell they should be able to make you pay for those repairs. Nowhere in the user guide does it say you need to leave your vehicle plugged in at all times. You didn't do anything outside of the norm and you didn't abuse your vehicle in any way so this falls squarely under the warranty. Don't let them off the hook on that.
But the 12v battery warranty is 12 months, he's outside the warranty, 12 v batteries die, it's a fact of life.

If his indication of March 2022 was when his vehicle was delivered it's out of warranty

For OP - Did you have an 12V accessories plugged into any of the 12V outlets?

I'm now curious if the Rivian trickle charges the 12V when it is parked or if it only charges the 12V when driving.

I have left my R1T (one of the first 20,000 vehicles sold) at the airport on multiple occasions from 3-10 days at a time. Never had any trouble. The first few times I lost about 10% of HV battery drain, but subsequent updates fixed that. The last two times were both about 5 days with maybe 1% -2% drop, and the last time the truck sat in 100+ degrees F during this summer's heat bomb.

That's a good point. To me they (Rivian) are implying other work needs to be done in addition to simply swapping the batteries. If their software or their design makes the 12v batteries die sooner than they should, the owner should not have to pay for that to be repaired or the new batteries IMHO. I certainly don't expect Rivian to provide new 12v batteries for the entire life of the truck.

This is inaccurate. 12v batteries are covered for 3 years/36k miles by Rivian.

Ahh, nevermind, My recollection was innaccurate, and it's because my friend has over 40k miles in under 1 year and his battery failed, so he had to pay $800 for new battery(s) don't recall if he had 1 or 2

What? So we are responsible for keeping it plugged in when it's at the airport for 7 days, with no avaiable charging infrastructure? What about 6.5 days.... 6 days .... 4 days ..... 3 days....?
Or….dare I go camping for a week in my vehicle built for exploring and outdoor adventure.

Hard questions need to be asked, (and I say this looking directly in the mirror) is Rivian just a fancy Northface/Patagonia sweater for the wealthy to LOOK outdoorsy? Simply a greenwashed Range Rover?

My 12v died. I charged to about 72% the day before, unplugged around 9pm. Around 4pm the next day, with no driving, I couldn’t unlock. So…19 hours unplugged. Rivian did not mention anything about being unplugged. But it’s almost 3 weeks for mobile service for a dead vehicle.
Jumpstarting the truck from the wires at the rear near the hitch receiver would have allowed you to open the truck and, more importantly, drive it. That has been my experience. I always have a jump starter available. When camping, I keep one with me outside the truck. 12 volt batteries are always a potential issue, even with ICE vehicles.

Please repost after you get this resolved. I’m not going to get worked up over a hypothetical.

Please fix my loud and under power AC, though!!!

Hey All,

TLDR - Always Keep Your R1T Plugged In

I haven't posted in a while since I've been generally happy with my R1T. However I am pretty incensed right now and wanted to let you all know about my experience.

I left my vehicle unattended for roughly 8 days, from July 25 until today August 2nd. It wasn't plugged in and I had left it with 80% charge.

When I checked last night August 1st, I still had 64% left, and this morning August 2nd, it was at 62%.

I saw a bunch of 12v errors and vehicle battery issues and proceeded to call Rivian Service. They had me reboot the vehicle and when it came back up, my vehicle showed 46% battery and more critical faults.

I couldn't put the vehicle in drive since the brakes wouldn't release even though it recognized my key and I lost power steering. The brakes also made a nice crunchy sound and was very hard to depress.

I was told depending on what they find at the service center that I may be responsible for the associated costs for this repair and car rental because I didn't have my R1T plugged in for the week I was away.

I'm awaiting a tow now to the service center even though their earliest appointment is for Aug 11.

Thought all the 12V issues were solved but I guess they aren't.

I'm really starting to sour on Rivian.

maybe related - I've called in to the service line for other issues about a month ago when I noticed incorrectly displayed range and overcharging. I was told since it's software and not a pressing problem they won't schedule an appt to have it looked at.
That’s insane, i just left my 2018 nissan leaf unplugged for 3 weeks while i Europe, lost 2-3% in those 3 weeks, this does not make any sense
