Finally, I have a chip on my windshield, confirming my doubts about its quality. The chip is less than the size of a dime.

What is the best solution: repair or replacement? I'm in the San Francisco - East Bay Area.

Also please suggest options for Windshield protection.

Feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bikram

If you have glass coverage through your auto insurance, use it. They typically will fix chips for free instead of replacing the entire windshield. If you're handy and can follow directions exactly as they're written, buy a permetex windshield chip repair kit and read the instructions start to finish multiple times before you begin. If the chip hasn't spidered and spread, you should be fine repairing it.

Have a windshield repair company fix the chip or buy a windshield repair kit and diy. FYI I have carried a couple of windshield repair kits in all of my cars so I can repair on the road before a crack can get bigger. I have had to repair and replace windshields on every car I have driven so it is not a Rivian problem it is a problem with all windshields.

I got a chip repaired at Safelite in February and it looks great. In certain light I can still see a small imperfection where they fixed it, but for approximately $200 it was worth it.

Most aftermarket windshield protection is expensive and still doesn’t guarantee it will prevent a crack or chip. IMO it’s easier to just make sure you have glass coverage on your auto insurance. That will cover repair or replacement when you need it.

And, furthermore, if a Safelite repair is ultimately unsuccessful, they will apply the repair cost to the replacement cost.

I had the windshield replaced recently, costing $1800 at the service center. My insurance covered some of it. I'd fill in the chip and hold off on the whole thing. The windows are very fragile.

Always worth repairing if you can, it's not that expensive at a glass shop (if you go cash no insurance) or you can get a kit to do it.

When the replacement is ~$1800 it's worth a shot. I had a spider crack on mine I got fixed and it's still good to date.
