You will be proven wrong. It will be different but it will still be unmistakably Rivian. The simple line drawn car in patent filing checks both boxes. Look at all auto brands. Across their entire line, there is a common design motif. This is called branding and brand differentiation.
It will look more like a cybertruck!

The render shows roof rails.

Fully expect Rivian to stick with the current design of roof racks. Maybe they will even be able to use the exact same roof racks. That would lower their costs by eliminating development of a new rack and increasing the production run for the existing racks.

I hope it does not look like that. I love my R1s but the front is the thing I like least, it’s too cartoonish. The community renderings of the r2 use thinner lines for the lights and that makes it look so much more mature

Can you make the frunk open like a hippo mouth?
That patent drawing is coming out next week. And the line drawing will show no door handles. So then we will have threads and new renderings about hippo mouth and no door handles.

In all seriousness, there is some validity in smaller headlights as they would cost less to produce. But unless the patent drawing is specifically about the headlights, it's all random speculation and the drawing is not a reliable indicator of anything else.

The stick drawing in the patent application may not be too far off the real R2. We must remember that the R2 must accomplish two goals. It must come in at a price that real people can afford, and yet have enough features and technology to outshine the competition. It must also, at least somewhat, look like a Rivian.

If it's the same size/dimension as a Bronco and has Rivian's touches, I'm sure it'll be a hit.
I know they've got some very thoughtful people who've been working for years on it. Moreover, they've seen how the R1 design has aged and what Land Rover and Jeep are doing in the space. That's the competition. Bronco pricing and sizing and Rover-worth design will win.

New render based on the patent design. What does everyone think?

Nice rendering. Well done.

Couple of thoughts. Maybe R2 will have 18 and 19" wheels is that its better proportioned to the smaller size vehicle, and perhaps bit more slope down in the front so that the smaller lights are in better balance compared to the rest of the font facia. Slightly thinner light bar is almost certain, but probably not as much as some would like.

The patent images typically are not an exact representation of any vehicle. It is, however, very likely representation of the vehicle.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
It looks like an R1S is squinting.

I expect Rivian to keep the design language of the R1 but de-feature and shrink a bit. While I am hoping for a regular hatch (like a GTI - and I know I will be disappointed), expect it to be more small SUV-ish (like an EV6 but with more ground clearance … so more Impreza-ish?).

If wishes were fishes, I'd rather see a frunk more like the Lightning. This looks too "flat", maybe have the same problem as earlier models with hood flex?

It's funny that this design based on a very dubious drawing isn't even like the drawing. It's double dubious. The typical corporate mindset is don't take chances, copy what works, don't make waves. I'm hoping Rivian hasn't latched on to that mindset so tight that they just copy the R1. I've noticed that the rear wheels in the covered mockup are so far back that there isn't much left behind the rear doors. Leaving out the rear side window is a cool idea that makes sense and looks different.

Headlights are way off
It looks ok but the roof line is a little to low profile. I like how the front corners are rounded. I just wish the back corners would be more rounded.
