I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to figure out the next way to manage the battery. I live in FL and keep my car in a garage so the garage temps are usually between 60-70F.

If I have my battery limit set to 70%. Is it best to leave it plugged in once it gets to 70% or simply unplug it once it gets there? It seems like keeping it plugged in keeps the battery temp around 90F and I'm not sure if this is good for it long term.

I've also thought about setting a charging schedule to start around 3am or something around there so it starts charging much later in the night. Not sure and any input is helpful.

There are some very smart folks here who know more specifics, but generally it’s fine to leave your vehicle plugged in. If you use the cabin conditioning schedule Rivian even allows you to choose whether it uses battery or wall power for that purpose.

You can also set a charging schedule, but I think the main reason to do that is if your electric utility has cheaper pricing overnight like many do… If yours doesn’t then don’t worry about it and your Rivian will simply stop charging at your set limit.

Leave it plugged in.

This is helpful. Just wasn't sure if it was normal to leave an EV plugged in from 9pm when it would roughly be at it's 70% all the way to 7am or so. Sounds like it's insignificant enough that it shouldn't deserve any time worrying about it.

Has 70% charge been established to be the best for long-term health? Somehow, I got it in my head that 80% was optimum, as it is for Lithium Polymer. Yes..No?

My truck says 70% for everyday use. I'm sure 80% is fine. I try and keep it close to 50% when my trip the next day allows.

Seems like it would depend on how you use it. We only need to charge once a week so I don’t see any reason to plug it in every day.

Oh, agreed. From 80% I see about 250-260 and only charge when it gets down to around 20%.

Yes. 70% is a better place to leave your vehicle than 80% if you don't need the extra range on a daily basis. 60% is better than 70%.

The chemistry being used in the R1 is happiest for the longest number of years when it is kept relatively close to 50%. Systems tested between 60 and 40% have shown to be incredibly long lived.

That said, we often need to use the rest of the pack, it is after all, a vehicle.

Look at research papers for battery degradation, really 57% or less is ideal. Also warm weather causes more degredatation. High state of charge and high temperature together is the worst.

Akira on the Tesla TMC forum has a lot of posts detailing that research.

70% to 100% doesn't have a huge difference, so people that leave their vehicle plugged in all day at 70% aren't preventing much degradation from leaving it sitting at 100%. Both are far from ideal .

I leave my evs sitting plugged in at 50-55%. On days I will drive a lot I schedule charging to finish right before I depart whatever SOC I need from 70-100%. That minimizes time the vehicle is sitting at a high state of charge but doesn't harm any range I need to drive.

This is a shocking surprise! ?

Do you have any links with data on this I could look into?

Don't sweat it, this is just somebody putting out bad info. It is not at all in line with industry numbers on the subject.
