PASSENGER AIRBAG TURNS OFF

Generally the airbag functions as intended. However, if my wife leans bag in the passenger seat the airbag will disengage and turn "off." Basically the seat no longer recognizes that she is in the seat. Doesn't even lean that far back. Anyone else? Doesn't seem right to me.

I just reported a similar issue to Rivian. The passenger airbag does not register when I have my wife or daughter in the passenger seat. Rivian told me since they are both under 150lbs. the airbag is disabled. This sounds totally crazy. The rep told me airbag deployment can hurt lighter passengers. I'm getting the same standard response that Rivian always issues "Vehicle performing as designed"

There are plenty of humans, adult and children, who weigh 120-150 lbs. if 150 is the cutoff, that is way too high. My wife is probably about 140 and it works fine when normally seated. This needs a fix.

This may need to be brought up with NHTSA. I’ve been meaning to but haven’t yet. It may be best if everyone that is having this issue report it separately. My R1S is at the Gaithersburg, MD service center for the same passenger airbag issue. My wife says she weighs about 125 lbs, so a little on the light side. I’ve been told US law requires that the airbag not deploy if a passenger is under 110 lbs. if my wife sits in the center of the seat, the airbag is functional. If she sits slightly to the side in the seat, the airbag is off. I’m not an engineer or safety expert, but I feel my wife is better off with an airbag. It seems like bad law and engineering are screwing up what should be a straightforward safety feature.

Same issues here - sometimes my wife has to press herself down into the seat for it to register her. All the same issues as above.

Had the same issue with the airbag turning off depending on how my wife sits in the seat. Mobile service tech confirmed sensors were working correctly back in Feb.
On a recent drive we realized it hadn't given us issues in a while. Since she hasnt gained weight, I think maybe the seat wore in allowing the sensor to receive a more distributed load input?

Same here. I noticed it turned off when my wife was sitting there. Must have been how she was sitting because she exceeds the weight minimum by plenty. It's okay. She does not read these forums.

Same here. My wife noticed hers said airbag off just a few days ago, while she was sitting in the seat. I had her get out and back in and then it came on.

The sensor is located towards the middle rear of the passenger seat bottom cushion. If you place all your weight there the "airbag off" will clear within a couple seconds, even while in motion. No need to exit the vehicle.

My daughter has to bounce a bit for it to engage. She's right around 110.
