I hadn't heard that. Where is it listed that all purpose is about 700 hp.
It’s not published, but there are videos testing 0-60 in different modes which show all purpose definitely has less power. It’s still faster than the PDM though, which means it has over 660hp and under 835hp. It definitely FEELS like it’s down about 100hp compared to sport

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
QM owner here.

When I get on the accelerator in All-Purpose, I make my passengers sick.

When I get on the accelerator in Sport, I make myself sick.

I believe that’s about 127 horsepower based on absolutely nothing at all.

I'm just a couple of months away from the date I'm hoping to take delivery of a sparkling new R1S and am trying to see if there are perceptible (subjective yes) differences for...
* Noise/vibration/harshness
* Perceived acceleration
... in various modes between the performance-dual and quad motor configs.

I'm in the pre-price-hike camp so the cost difference is negligible ($500) compared to the cost of the vehicle. The only reason for me to go with the perf-dual is the max pack (+$6500). Despite the minimal perceived range improvement (let's not debate that dead horse here) since one of the routes I expect to travel on a few times a year is ~350 miles and this will enable charging en-route to be optional.

In any event, this question is more about the differences other than the battery pack :)
I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I'm getting the R1S for my wife coming from a 2022 Model X LR.

I was hoping this thread would provide some insights. It's going to be a family hauler and not an off road vehicle.

Saying that I'm pre-price hike so either is a great deal based on current list price. I wouldn't mind having a play around with drift mode on the quad if I'm going to be honest (for $700 CAD difference).

I didn't find the info I needed in this thread so kept digging and found this OOS Reviews on this exact topic where Kyle drives both vehicles back to back.

Based on the points in this video I'm going to go PDM over Quad because:
  1. Quieter
  2. Efficiencies today and what they will likely implement moving forward as it's all vertically integrated Rivian tech
  3. They have apparently fixed the ongoing half shaft issues that still plague the Quad
  4. There's a lower chance of old inventory stock being resold (here in Canada) and it's likely to be a newer build
Hope this helps in your decision.

We have an R1T QM and an R1S DMP. They would both be DMP if I could go back in time. About NVH: the QM has a perceptible motor whine from the front motors. The DMP front motor is hard to detect. When I sit in the middle row of the R1S DMP I can barely hear the rear motor. It sounds like it has a two speed automatic transmission (like a Tycan) because you hear it spin up when accelerating from zero then spin down when it disengages and the other rotating parts sounds continue to increase in pitch. Can’t hear the rear motor of the DMP when sitting in the front seat.

This was very helpful - thank you! Could you elaborate on this? Or perhaps point me to a thread?
What is there to elaborate on? I have seen no reported half shaft problems on DMs, and the whole drivetrain is just much tighter feeling.

The half shaft issues on the QM are well documented, and persist.

If you search the forum for “half shafts” you’ll see the issues that people are experiencing in the QM. It’s basically a clicking or popping sound as you roll on and off the power (I believe).

As Kyle mentions towards the end of his video, Rivian are applying a fix with washers for people but it sounds like it only works temporarily for many.

Yup, the coating on the new washers wears off and they get noisy again....although I believe its the splines with too much play in the hubs that are now the culprit on mine.

I’m not really sure I’d call it an issue. Some make noise, they don’t break.

I'm curious to know if there is a difference in the gear whine between the quad (Bosch) and dual motor (Enduro). I feel the gear whine on my QM is a bit more than I was expecting from an EV.

To be fair, my model S splines need lubed once every two years or else I get a clicking sound.

There's a difference according to those who have driven both, the DM is much quieter. Personally, I wish my quad motor was a little louder.
