Hi all,

I am traveling to a rather remote location that has what they call "shore" power. I asked for more info and they sent me this picture of the panel:

Rivian R1T R1S Plugging into "shore power"? IMG_0100

Does this look like something I could use with the mobile charger that came with my R1S? The plug looks right, I just can't tell how much actual charge I'd be getting. Any experienced folks or electricians here able to answer?

Much appreciated!

Rivian portable will do 32A. That circuit would support up to 40A with the right EVSE.

Multiple by 240V to get your approximate power.

How do we know this is 240V?

I suppose we can't be entirely sure, but this is a dual-pole breaker for that outlet. They certainly could wire a single 120V onto both hot legs for that outlet, and it would be OK with an RV that doesn't have any 240V equipment, but the wire would have to be appropriately sized to that bus with the assumption it could end up using that much energy.

It will give you 7.6kw-9.6kw depending on whether your connector maxes out at 32A or 40A. Basically, a decent L2 charge. Just make sure whatever portable EVSE ("charger") you have with you has a NEMA 14-50 connector to fit that outlet.

The term "shore power" is a bit confusing as it's a term that's typically used for plugging in boats when they're in a marina. From what you've posted, there's nothing special about this power source as it relates to charging your vehicle.

This is good news. I'll be able to stay plugged in there for a full day. Thanks!

That looks like a standard RV campground pedestal ("shore power" is an RV term). Should work fine. Adjust max amps, as advised above.
Do you mean adjust in the charging options in the R1S? I assume the Rivian portable charger will just pull 32A and that would be fine.

Will work fine for mobile charging but if possible I would check the voltage first. At some campgrounds there is considerable voltage drop. If there is, you want to limit the amount of power your pulling in the truck screen (see video below). If there is already voltage drop pulling too much could cause a brown out situation and make neighboring campers unhappy with you. Ask me how I know ?. Anyway I always check voltage and hopefully Rivian will show voltage in the energy screen in a future update. Tesla shows voltage right in their display.

Use the Rivian mobile charger with the 14-50 plug, and you should be okay. I would check the outlet to make sure it isn't too hot. You will get about 16 miles of range per hour.

Thanks for all the replies and help, everyone. This isn’t a campground, but a concert venue that has 3 shore power drops like this. I’m working closely with the production staff so if anything goes awry we should be able to work it out. ?

For a concert venue, I imagine the shore power is provided for Nightliners and other tour buses. With that said, this still looks exactly like a panel you'd find at a campground. I would say expect it to be a 50A circuit, but hopefully more reliable than most campgrounds. You should be good.

It worked! I got 6.8kW for 12 hours straight which took me up to 77% state of charge and was a life saver in way northern WI. The real problem on this trip was the a2z NACS adapter which gave me massive trouble. It simply would not fully connect to 9 out of 10 Tesla chargers. Stressful!
