Poll: Operational Sun Roof

Would you like an option for an operational sunroof or some equivalent (e.g., removable panels)?)

Agreed. I really would like to be able to haul a few 10' conduit / pipe sections home from my local big-box store without using a full roof rack/bed rack.
I was able to get a dozen 10 footers in my R1S would probably not do it with lumber though.

My preference would be to replace Opal's glass roof with an insulated metal roof. I totally covered Opal's glass roof with reflective material and black screen early on. We found the glass roof distracting, and in certain sunlight conditions, we could not read anything on the screens. Rivian's glass roof was another stupid idea. Our son bought a Tesla Model X and returned before the 7 days because he couldn't stand its glass roof. He now has an R1S and has completely covered the glass roof pieces.

Not sure what an "adventure" vehicle is doing with a glass roof that has the potential to break if you look at it the wrong way. I would prefer a solid roof. It would increase the structural integrity of the vehicle as well as the overall insulation. It should be an option to get the glass roof or a sunroof. Rivian could charge extra for these.

I really don't like the fixed glass roof. It is an interesting feature for back seat passengers, but in the front seat you can't get any benefit out of it IMO. And it lets in a lot of the extreme temperatures that would be muted if the roof were insulated.

On the other hand, I love to open the roof when the weather is good. Most opening panoramic roofs can be covered when closed. It isn't as insulating as a metal roof, but it does block the sun when you don't want it shining in.

I was very disappointed when Rivian failed to introduce the removable roof option they planned. I prefer an opening roof rather than removable, but I would definitely pay for either option if offered. I would pay for a metal roof if the opening ones were not available.

From a cost perspective, it makes sense for Rivian to keep the models similar and simple. So I get it. And I want Rivian to survive - controlling cost is a big deal. Still, I am very disappointed the option isn't available.

We have a retractable sunroof on our RAV4 Prime. In the 2-1/2 years we have owned the car, I have had it opened maybe 4 or 5 times.

I so wish the Rivian had a sliding cover that would block the sun. We did get it tinted pretty dark so it isn't too bad. The 1 thing that Rivian dropped the ball on is giving us that option.

I've posted this before in similar threads. There are companies out there that make Carbon Fiber roof panels. I wish one of them would get on this for the Rivian aftermarket. If my roof cracked, I'd be on this like a 4 year old on a juicebox.

I’d love something like this in virtually any suitable material. Ideally it would be paintable or wrappable so people could leave it raw, make it black to match the factory look, body color, or white for least solar gain.

Probably too expensive to develop and ship, but for the R1S it would be nice to have a single piece which would replace both pieces of roof glass, the filler piece between them, and the side filler pieces which cover the areas in line with the rack mounting points. I bet that would substantially reduce wind noise from the roof area for those who have the issue.

There were some prototypes of removable roofs that never made it to production.

If you search here you'll find various threads discussing it.

You mention "It seems odd that a luxury vehicle would lack this." Rivian is not postitioned or marketed as a luxury vehicle.

I have a power sunroof in my 2010 Avallanche. I rarely use it. I would prefer that my R1S had a sollid roof.
I think that the all glass roof in So California is not a great selling feature as the vehicle gets unusually hot parked outside on sunny days and makes me fearful of using my roof racks as the risk of breaking the glass is worrisome. I noted that the manufacturer does not even allow the service centers to mount these racks for customers who bought the racks from Rivian. I would think that unless there is a risk of damage there is no other reason to avoid taking on that responsibility. It should have just been part of the delivery check list.

Interesting idea, I really like the big glass up top and don't miss having a sun roof. Would be kind of cool but I don't see much need for it

I agree fixed glass roofs are stupid but this isn't a new idea from Rivian, its more of a trend in the industry and plenty of 'luxury' vehicles are following it.
Yes, it's a trend but smart company doesn't just copy or follow what Tesla does. Please get rid of that glass roof and give us the option to purchase sunroof.

I wouldn’t consider anything other than glass roof. I am 6’2” not too tall and like to have space. The glass roof open it up for me; even in total sun. Any car that doesn’t have it as default is archaic I feel; just my personal 2 cents.

Hey Everyone,

I have this in my ‘99 4Runner and use it all the time. It seems odd that a luxury vehicle would lack this.
The Rivian is as much a "luxury vehicle" as your '99 4Runner... meaning it is not. (I had a '98 4Runner, 5 speed SR5... which I had never sold it!). I'd much rather have the roll down back window like the 4runner over a functional sunroof :)
