Looking for any advice or recommendations on charging with an adapter using the Rivian 220v portable charging cable. At our families farm we have a 220 V outlet with a 30 amp circuit breaker. I found this adapter that would fit the receptacle and fit the Rivian portable charger. Does anyone see any issues with using this set up? Thank you.

It can be annoying to remember to set your charging level down before every time you plug in.

Since that's a 50A outlet though, I'd double check how long the run is and the wire size. You might be able to upsize the breaker if the panel has the extra capacity. Black romex is typically 6 AWG, which should be good for a 55A rating.

10-50P outlets are ungrounded though, so they must be routing the grounding wire in the 14-50 side to the neutral wire on the 10-50p to make it work for an EVSE. Some people don't think that's a great idea but I'm neutral to it.

That’s how I charge mine. I got the same adapter wire, but I had to get one that had a grounding wire on it before it would work.

I used a similar setup to charge at my uncle’s house on a trip. Be aware unless Rivian has changed it. It will default back to 48 amps at the end of charging. If you resume charging it will already have defaulted back to 48 amps. So if you are finished I’d unplug before using climate or anything. Tripped the breaker a few time before I realized what was happening.

I'd recommend *not* relying on the truck's software for limiting charging current. Look into something like the Grizzl-E Mini or some other portable EVSE that you can set the current on. The EVSE's will at least hold the current setting until the next time you change it so there's less risk of pulling too much current for the plug you're using.

The bigger question is why there's a 50A outlet and only a 30A breaker.

Its a farm and how they wire things in the country is always interesting. I have never used my portable charger. So that is why I was looking for advice and recommendations. In your opinion or anyone's else is the 30 amp breaker a bad thing?? Thanks for your help.

My father in law uses this outlet for his welder and large air compressor with out any issues. But he is willing to swap out the breaker to 40 or 50 amp???

I was at a VRBO over the weekend and used the 30 Amp dryer outlet to charge. The dryer was right inside the door so I didn't even need an extension cord - the length of the Rivian Portable Charger was enough. Here's what I did:
  • Set the charging amperage in the R1s to 24 amps, after confirming that it was indeed a 30 Amp breaker
  • Plugged in the charger and confirmed it started correctly - I think I was getting 5.4 KW/HR
  • Checked the adapter going into the dryer outlet every 30 minutes to confirm it wasn't getting warm
  • Unplugged it when I went to sleep so I didn't have any worries (also required because I couldn't close the door due to the charging cable)
As mentioned above, I did have to reset the charging amperage in the car each time I went to charge because it will default back to 48 amps.

You're going to want to limit charging to 24A NOT 30A when you use that as well. For continuous draw, you're only supposed to pull 80% of the breaker's rating. The 30A breaker is not designed to be continuously operating at 30A.

Other than that, you should be fine.

Why 20A instead of 24A for a 30A breaker? I'm still learning and had no issues with charging sessions lasting multiple hours with the R1S pulling 24 amps on the 30 amp breaker.

No reason - my math was wrong.

I updated my response with the correct figures. Thanks for catching that.

Only if you follow @Dark-Fx advice and verify wiring gauge.

I used this one with great success at a Forest Service cabin in Montana last year for 3 nights. It primarily hosts work parties but has random openings to book it, so there are a ton of bunk beds, 2 fridges and 2 stoves!

Supposedly if you reset your home location to this new location, it will keep the setting. I have never tested this though.
