This is the image Rivian has in the configurator. It's pretty obvious to me that it's not perfectly clear, especially when you compare it to the windshield view. Your only real recourse here would be attempting to sue Rivian for deceptive advertising, which I don't think you'd win.
Rivian R1T R1S Problems with Dynamic Glass Roof R1S? 1723206579325-wk

Next time you probably need to take the time to explore the features of the vehicle you ordered, before signing the dotted line, if this is really that big of a problem for you.

Just tint the roof, that's what I did on my gen 1.

I believe when paying full cash for a new vehicle
what does paying "full cash" have to do with it? I'm sorry you don't like a feature you paid for but it doesn't sound like it isn't performing as designed or expected.

Note for your next purchase - tell the delivery specialist that you want to take a ride with them prior to signing to ensure things are as expected.

Would be interested to know if any other 2025 R1S owners with Dynamic Glass roof are seeing 50-60% opacity even when dynamic glass is toggled off-. Roof glass is extremely bright in either on- or off- position and when the sun hits it in off- position, it is blinding. In obscure daylight, toggled off, the glass sports rainbow concentric circles inside it, further impeding the view .

When the glass is toggled on- it simply turns opaque, but still lights up like a very bright white beacon when the sun is shining on it, blinding passengers. Dynamic glass is not providing any shading from the sun, nor cooling. The glass itself heats up to very hot temperatures in the off- position, hotter than normal roof glass. We park in a garage so we have not tested the feature parked in sunlight all day to see if it is cooling. My guess is no.

The whole point of the Rivian experience is that you can see your adventures out the windows. With Dynamic roof glass, you cannot see. The glass roof is the biggest feature of the passenger experience so this is really a poor design on Rivian's part. In the attached photos you can see the difference between the passenger 2nd row window glass and the dynamic glass roof ( toggled off-). Vast difference in visibility.

Rivian service department said they cannot replace the dynamic with normal glass. It appears this is "as designed". I'd like to know how it was designed because there are no details about it. What were they thinking? Can it be covered with commercial films that keep the glass from overheating, as it is currently doing? Dynamic glass was not a feature we specifically chose. As pre-reservation holders we could only shop available vehicles in the Rivian Shop. This one came with the dynamic glass.

In reaching out to Rivian for support on the dynamic glass a day after taking possession we found that Rivian had revoked its 7-day return policy. When we inspected the vehicle it was housed inside a storage facility having a featureless white metal ceiling so we were not able to fully see how opaque the glass truly was in the off- position. We were not allowed to drive it iduring our inspection to see it in daylight.

I am really hoping for a recall on dynamic glass roofs. This is unacceptable. All you see is a reflection of the car interior.

I don't know if you have been in a regular R1S with the normal glass on a hot day. You definitely roast and it was a little too bright for my liking, so I bought a sunshade to block it out. I never open the panoramic roof in any of our other cars with shades, so I don't really miss it.

Just to play the devils advocate, I'll ask my Rivian engineer neighbor what he thinks about the roof and how it performs on the test vehicles. He's is also an owner of his own R1 and is pretty honest with me about what he likes and doesn't like in the vehicles.
Please let us know what your Rivian engineer says about the dynamic roof.

@rivuser2214 joined the forum, created this thread on the same day, wrote a few follow-up posts, and nothing since. I hope they didn’t bail forever because of the pushback since I’m curious to see what they say about some of the responses. ?

I haven’t seen this in person, but to me it seems like electrochromic (essentially variable tint and light transmission) would be better than this, which I think of as LCD privacy (switchable opacity/diffusion/clarity).

Rivian made it quite clear the 7 day return policy was dead a few months ago.
Makes me wonder just how many people were opting to return their vehicles within that 7 day window. Must be a significant amount if they terminated the policy.

Would be good to know but it isn't a common thing for car makers to offer so they are now like the BMW/Audi/VW/Ford etc etc. Still a buyer beware world.

Please let us know what your Rivian engineer says about the dynamic roof.
He said.... it supposed to reduce "some" heat radiation, but not 100%. When he has driven with the dynamic roof to places that are both sunny and hotter than normal, he installs a physical shade. He believes it functions as designed. It is very comparable to other vehicles with similar glass, but at least Rivians gets darker. Others just turn opaque, diffusing light, rather than blocking it.

In the early days when he was testing in some of the hottest places on earth I remember him installing a homemade cardboard sunshade, because the glass wasn't as dark as current models and he was getting roasted.

I still wish Rivian would just offer a solid steel roof. Living in sunny Florida we get enough. It should be lighter and cheaper to do.
