Hey Guys, I am coming from Tesla to R1T . I just took delivery couple days ago. Now, I use to charge my Tesla at chargepoint location in my apartment complex in Dorchester,MA. I never really bothered about the KWh amps and everything before. But the same charging station use to tell me its rate is 35miles/hr for my Tesla model Y and when I plugged into Rivian it says 10miles/hr rate. This shows to be 6Kwh charging station at $0.26/kwh. I definitely need help figuring this out. What am I supposed to look at? is Rivian really slow charging connected to Level 2 than a Tesla?

For people in Boston, Are there any free/cheap charging options? I just moved from Texas where I use to charge for free near my neighbourhood.

If you're getting 6 kWh with the Rivian it is charging at the same speed as the Tesla, but the range impact is less. I had the same confusion when I went from a Bolt to the Mach E. The Chevy was much better mi/hr because it made more efficient use of the same energy.

Just like putting 5gal of gas will get you way further in a Honda Accord than a Ford F150.

Your Tesla uses 250 (?) watt hours to go a mile. Your R1T takes about twice that. Thus if you put watt hours into each at the same rated the range will be added to the Tesla about twice as fast as to the Rivian. The numbers reported by the charging station show a ratio of 3.5:1. I think thats more extreme than what it really is based on what I know about the consumptions.

You can find free Level 2s around but they are hit and miss. Lots of the Boston garages have free charging for four hours if you pay for parking, so not really ‘free’. I know for full on free the EVs in my building use the free chargers at Whole Foods on Harrison and or the South Bay garage.

Use Plugshare to find the free ones and be sure to look at the check ins to see if they’re working. Lots of stuff is broken a lot of the time ?
